A special friend and generous wine lover had his birthday. It was a surprise party for which we all brought a few special bottles to share. All wines were tasted not blind. And it was a great evening!!!
2009 Bricco Maiolica Langhe Pensiero Infinito 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Beautiful bouquet with soft yellow fruits and a beautiful dose of oak. Same on the palate. Full bodied and a firm amount of bitterness. Even though it gives the impression of low acidity the wine has good freshness. Beautiful wine.

2009 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 95 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Not so many notes, but this is an extremely youthful and great wine. Butter candy, concentrated and soft yellow fruits, good oak and bitterness. Good freshness. Enormous length. I love this baby.

2008 Domaine Bruno Clair Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Elegant bouquet with white and yellow fruits and citrus. On the palate a firm dose of tart citrus and some minerals. Lacking a bit in concentration.

2006 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Sweeney Canyon 92 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
In the bouquet as well as on the palate loaded with yellow tropical fruits like pineapple. A firm dose of oak as well, but the fruits can handle it. Enormous length, but with 16.5% ABV that is not a big surprise.

1978 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru)
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tertiary and autumn impressions in the bouquet. On the palate rust and a lot of old age acidity and bitterness. Not dead yet, but also not really enjoyable anymore. Far past its prime. No score.

1959 Château La Pointe
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Earthy and tertiary bouquet. Quite old, but still showing some life. On the palate tea, coffee, figs, mushrooms and wet forest floor. Quite old alright, but still alive and drinkable and still giving some pleasure. I will not score the wine because it was well past its peak.

1947 Château Cheval Blanc Vandermeulen Bottling 98 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Very special of course to get the opportunity to taste this wine, even while it is a Vandermeulen bottling. In the bouquet still dark berries, earth, herbs and spices, chocolate and coffee. On the palate dark berries, still creamy, truffle, chocolate, beautiful juicy acidity, tannin and bitterness. The wine even improves while in the glass. Truly great!

Beautiful bouquet with a lot of garrigue, mint and chocolate. On the palate red fruits still, herbs and spices and some pleasant barnyard. Beautiful juice with an enormous complexity. Round, well balanced and harmonious and everything is perfectly integrated. Really extremely beautiful bottle.

1989 Mas de Daumas Gassac 91 Points
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault
In the bouquet dark forest fruits, salty licorice, sweet spices and a touch of barnyard. On the palate red and dark forest fruits, sweet spices, firm acidity and slightly drying tannin. Still a beautiful wine which can probably last until the end of the decade.

1993 Château Latour Grand Vin 94 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
This evening Latour showed (again) that it makes great wine. First my tasting note: Beautiful and classical bouquet, showing maturity, cassis, cedar, smoke, tobacco, etc. etc. On the palate all comes back plus beautiful cassis, acidity and round tannin. And still beautiful soft power in the tannin. The wine is mature, but the tannin promises there is still future. At least until 2018 or a bit later. It all depends on what you like. I can appreciate young wines as well as old wines, each for their own merits and concerning this Latour; I love it now, but I am sure that when it softened even a bit more, I might love it even a bit more because it will show even more finesse. 94+?!

2000 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 96 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Very intense bouquet with beautiful herbs and spices, licorice and leather. On the palate wonderful cassis juice, minerals and flint stone minerality. Still enormously powerful, but also already so lovely tannin. A truly great and still very youthful wine. Hope to taste/drink this again at any moment, but also in about 10 years from now.

1997 Opus One 95 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Beautiful and silky soft and complex bouquet with sweet ripe fruits, eucalyptus, exclusive oak and some chocolate. Same on the palate. A mouth full of soft and delicious wine. Soft and fully integrated tannin. At its peak now and no real hurry I suppose, but no reason to wait either.

2010 Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée les Grenaches de Pierre 96 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
No formal notes. Beautiful raspberries and other ripe fruits. A lot of garrigue. A lot of sweetness, good acidity and round tannin. In fact a lot of everything and this is still a baby. Enormously lush and beautiful. Wait until 2023 at least. 96++

1983 Château Rieussec 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
The bouquet is really evolved with honey and candied apricots and polishing wax, caramel and butterscotch. Same on the palate. Good acidity. No more notes, but although it can last for many more years, for my taste this bottle was on the edge of becoming too old. Still a score of 92 for this evening.

2005 Sine Qua Non Marsanne Mr. K The Straw Man 97 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
This really is an extraordinary wine. There is a lot of orange peel and apricots and concentrated apple. Very concentrated and yet also complex and very elegant, fresh and not tiresome. Just perfect harmony and balance. Lovely!
