Introduction

The rules were simple which was to bring a $25 or more retail bottling. The Blind Tasting was done throughout and first place got 2 points and second place 1 point. A dominate performance for the Carlisle.

2007 Carlisle Papera Ranch Zinfandel 19 points
2007 Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah 7 points
2004 Kaesler W.O.M.S. 6 points

Flight 1 - Whites (4 Notes)

I liked the Boillot the best and it was the most balanced wine in the white flight. The Morgan would have scored higher with less oak.

Flight 2 - Reds (10 Notes)

I really enjoyed the Carlisle, Kaesler, Spring Valley and a surprise on the Whitehall Lane which with some air showed better than the last time I sampled it. The Romeo was flawed and the J.K. Carriere is one of the worst Pinots I have sampled in a while.

  • 2008 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines 89 Points

    Portugal, Douro

Dark purple. Spice, cinnamon, violets and dark fruits. A rustic edge to the wine. This should improve with some aging.

  • 2004 Kaesler W.O.M.S. 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Nice wine with blueberries, spice, minerals and cherry. Medium tannins and medium and concentrated finish. Should age nicely for five plus years.

  • 2007 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

The best Zin I have tasted in a while. Perfume, cherry blossoms, blueberries, spice and dark fruits come together on this concentrated wine and it has a long finish. Medium tannins and this should age for five plus years. A really fun wine to drink.

  • 2006 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Surprise wine of the night. I had this eight months ago and the rep didn't decant it which still blows my mind as the industry doesn't prepare their wines prior to pouring. This wine was open for business perfume, cherry, roses and plum. Still tannic and should age really well. A real nice surprise wine in a blind tasting.

  • 2005 Benjamin Romeo Rioja Predicador Flawed

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Watered down and damp earth. Not corked just stewed. Probably heat damage.

  • 2007 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Not a wine I will be running out to buy and really not Cab like. Tasted blind. Light nose with spice, floral and raspberry. Palate shows little depth and is comprised mainly of spice and floral notes. Medium finish. Pass.

Nice showing and decanted 2 hours. Earth, raspberries, floral and stones. Mild funk and similar to a CDP in many ways. Should age for five more years.

  • 2008 J. K. Carriere Pinot Noir 85 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Not a good Pinot. Charcoal, floral and really light. Short to medium finish. Little concentration for an 08.

  • 2006 Tablas Creek Syrah 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Spice, plum and blueberries come together to create a fruit forward style wine. On the palate some spices enter the frame and has a medium finish.

  • 2007 Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

A nice finish to the blind tasting. Blueberries, spice, cedar and plums. Good concentration and medium to long finish. This should age well. Another winner for Washington.
