Tasted by Neecies on 3/22/2024: Paired with a '95 Ornellaia. There aren't many occasions on which a '95 Tignanello wouldn't be my favorite of the flight, but this was one. Medium red with dark berry fruit and sun-dried tomato. Imminently pleasurable, but wow that Ornellaia!!! (342 views)
Tasted by Araldinho on 1/6/2024 & rated 90 points: Medium deep brick red.
Aromas of cedar, tobacco, blackcurrant, leather, black pepper, cardamom and nail varnish. Hint of reservoir water.
Finely grained chewy tannins. Blackcurrant acids and walnut bitterness. Medium body.
Palate of prune, cassis, sloe, juniper wood, walnut, bay leaf and harrowed soil.
A dry, structure-driven and slightly fading wine with dried fruit, wonderful peppery and nutty notes and a persistent finish. Drink within 3-5 years. Tasted 2024.
Tasted alongside Guado al Tasso, Antinori, 1998, and the matched wine display far more lively fruit and generosity, while the present wine is serious and rustic with inner core and minerality. (719 views)
Tasted by Cirix on 12/28/2023 & rated 88 points: vino conservato per anni in ambiente a temperatura e umidità controllata.
aperto circa due ore prima, tappo molto secco.
(no decanter)

(688 views)

Tasted by ash_then_chase on 3/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Sensual nose of florals and new rubber bands (light touch) and forest floor. Mild, pleasant tannins. Lengthy mid palate acidity. Remnants of red fruit continue to percolate after a two-hour decant. Hints of spices (primarily white pepper) as the wine level dips in the glass. Finished with a perfectly ripe bright af red cherry. @ Rezdôra (2580 views)
Tasted by R Z on 10/19/2021 & rated 95 points: Same experience as Talbot61 and JimsWineCellar. This is the reason for buying and cellaring great wines. This bottle was still youthful, refreshing, resolved tannins, with rich elegance, delicious, singing like Jonas Kaufmann at Carnegie Hall. Decanted and served with home-cooked garganelli pasta bolognese. 80% sangiovese 20% cabernet. Glad I waited on my single bottle of Tignanello '95. (2794 views)
Tasted by talbot61 on 10/13/2021 & rated 94 points: This bottle was still youthful, with clear tannins, a good lashing of acidity, and no flavors I would associate with old age, even though it was emerging from sub-optimal storage. Dark and rich, with strong berry flavors, excellent as an accompaniment for quickly roasted Roman lamb. (2658 views)
Tasted by Jimswinecellar on 10/9/2021 & rated 94 points: We did a vertical tasting with a 1995 and a 1996 Tignanello. The 1995 was by far the better of the two wines. It was amazing! The nose and taste are what you would expect from a great vintage. (2554 views)
Tasted by sergio19 on 3/3/2021 & rated 95 points: One of my favourite wine!
After many years this wine is still an ambassador of italian wine. but the history of this wine also represents much more. This is an example of renaissance of Italian wine, which was scarcely considered in front of French wines. You can read the history of this wine in many website or book, but only tasting give you the sense of what I mean. I’m lucky because have a lot of Tignanelo from many vintage. The 1995 is particularly interesting because that year the summer was fresh and wet, this condition delayed fruit development. But September was hot and dry, good for harvest. I opened this wine in March 2021 and I tasted every drop of this wine with curiosity and patience, discovering behind every sip the reasons why a success story continues. (2024 views)
Tasted by MeToo on 10/14/2020: Definitely showing its age, as the color is starting to turn brickish at the edges. But still shows a fragrant nose of cherry fruit and a bit of baking spice. Medium-bodied, it displays cherry fruit with some plum, and develops some earthy (herbal?) and baking spice notes towards the lingering finish. Mellow tannins and bright acidity give it nice balance and freshness. I can’t say I remember how fruit forward this wine was the last time I drank it, but it’s incredible that it’s still quite lovely so many years later... (1251 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 9/16/2020 & rated 92 points: Medium reddish garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries & strawberries with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty, cocoa/coffee, spices, leather, tar, anise, herbs, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, developed, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with earthy notes, mushrooms, chocolate, coffee, spices & minerals. Lingering smooth supple finish. Drinks quite well at 25 years of age but doubt any further development would occur from additional aging. (2206 views)

Tasted by MC2 Wines on 4/6/2019: Acker April 2019 (Marea in NYC): This is incredibly vegetal which might not be for everyone, but worked for me. Felt a bit like a wine's version of salad. Still has some good brightness. And a bit of intensity. I like it. (3848 views)
(3881 views)
Tasted by RussK on 12/2/2018 & rated 92 points: Russk. Beautiful! My WOTN at Jim's Holiday WSW in the condo party room. Soft, earthy, kind of like an old Medoc. Medium bodied. No off notes from being over mature. (3082 views)
Tasted by seijaro on 11/11/2018 & rated 93 points: Another bottle, even nicer than the last one... full and smooth, a mouthful of Sangiovese with a Cabernet overlay. Some bricking in color but still has a fresh taste, lots of dark cherry. It's certainly at it's peak and might even be a tad past its best, but oh so enjoyable. (2730 views)
Tasted by FrancoisD on 11/11/2018 & rated 95 points: 3e bouteille du lot, superbe.
Aromes biens taillés: cerise noire, pin, feuilles, truffe
Avec des tannins soyeux pour emballer le tout.
À son appogé. (2045 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/18/2018 & rated 93 points: 13% alcohol.

Somewhat translucent and slightly developed pomegranate color with a wide, thin and almost colorless rim. The nose feels savory, somewhat developed and surprisingly herbaceous for a Tignanello with aromas of tobacco, beef jerky, sour cherry, some bell pepper tones, a little bit of sandy earth, light plummy fruit, sweeter nuances of chokeberry marmalade, a hint of chili and a herbaceous touch of leafy Cabernet character. The wine is full-bodied, velvety smooth and somewhat developed - yet not old - on the palate with pretty savory flavors of sour cherries and wizened blackcurrants, some vegetal bell pepper tones, a little bit of tart red plum, light tobacco tones, a hint of beef jerky and a touch of cedar. The wine is quite structured with its moderately high acidity and still quite grippy firm tannins. The finish is moderately grippy and somewhat developed with dry, savory flavors of wizened sour cherries, some ripe blackcurrant tones, a little bit of leather and woody hints of cigar box and pencil shavings.

A nicely developed, complex and surprisingly herbaceous vintage of Tignanello where the vegetal and slightly leafy Cabernet notes have taken somewhat more noticeable presence than is typical. These herbaceous tones and cedary wood notes lend a noticeably Bordelais air to the wine, which suits it really well. Although very attractive in style, this vintage doesn't reach the levels of the most impressive vintages - lacking some depth and intensity in comparison. Nevertheless, this is a very lovely vintage of Tignanello, slightly lighter and more herbaceous in style; perhaps developing at a slightly faster pace, I doubt this wine this wine isn't going to develop much more from here and although it will most likely keep for many more years, it won't be as long-lived as some Tignanellos.  Tasted by Dalex on 7/15/2018 & rated 90 points: Lovely but past peak. Brief tasting so minimal Notes. Side by side with 1998 which was remarkably better. (2639 views)
Tasted by seijaro on 6/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Nice color, moderate sediment, faint nose on opening. Tight right out of the bottle, but gradually opened with air and warming from the 60 degree cellar. Clean crisp taste of Sangiovese with a bit of prune in the back. (2852 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 6/2/2018: Silky smooth with a nice earthy note. Delicious. (2485 views)

Tasted by Kingdoberman on 12/29/2016 & rated 96 points: Taste of strawberry on the initial palate, can taste slight oak and leather. Red fruit, dark cherry, alcoholic on the nose. Producer Location - Tenuta Tignanello (Google Maps)
The Antinori family has produced wine since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Winemakers Guild. Throughout its long history (across 26 generations) the family has always managed winemaking in person. Today, the company is managed by Marquis Piero Antinori. The company has dedicated great efforts to improving the quality of its wines, through careful planning of investments and research programs embracing all production aspects. The success of these programs has enabled the company to produce a superb range of quality wines from its various estates in Tuscany and Umbria. The Tignanello Estate is home to the famous Tignanello and Solaia vineyards. Located between the Greve and Pesa Valleys, in the heart of the Chianti Classic area, 30 kilometers south of Florence, Tignanello boasts 350 hectares of land with 147 hectares of vines. The vineyards are divided into small, individual areas over an area of 47 hectares at Tignanello, facing South-West, and the neighboring 10 hectares at Solaia, both with Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes that benefit from specific exposure and micro-climate.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.

Tignanello

The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soil plot with tufaceous elements, planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances, it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line Italian wine. Tignanello, originally a Chianti Classico Riserva labeled Vigneto Tignanello, was first vinified as a single vineyard wine in the 1970 vintage, when it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia, and was aged in small oak cooperage. With the 1971 vintage the wine became a Vino da Tavola della Toscana and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originates. Beginning with this vintage, Tignanello stopped adhering to the rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare, and with the 1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the 1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello was not produced in the 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984 and 1992 vintages.
