Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 264 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vailman on 11/20/2021 & rated 90 points: My last bottle. The fruit has faded in relation to prior bottles. Dried herbs, plum and sour cherry. Dry and austere. Even perfectly cellared at 53 degrees (and by the way the cork was perfect after 14 years), this wine is past its prime. (1478 views)
Tasted by wchrisw on 2/20/2021 & rated 88 points: I figured at this age it wouldn't get any better so it was time. Slow ox in bottle for a couple hours, dark, rich, still has life left. I got some creamy vanilla mid palate which I wasn't a fan of. Nothing wrong with it but not exciting either. (1703 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 4/25/2020 & rated 90 points: a very big CA cab. lots of raspberry, blackberry to me; the end has a bit too much heat IMHO. more dark red than purple and medium+ body. this is solid but not amazing. not certain how this will age...my gut is its in a peak window now as the fruit is the best part of the wine and I dont see that getting better... (2118 views)
 Tasted by Gr8penut on 8/19/2019 & rated 92 points: chewy and dark-wish i had more! (2445 views)
Tasted by tom_wine on 7/7/2019 & rated 89 points: Decanted for an hour and tried over two days. This was a tannic monster, but I found the fruit fading. The nose was closed but I picked up some dried herbs and plum. (2454 views)
Tasted by Intellectual Sasquatch on 4/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Popped & poured. Delicious. Plenty of fruit, but balanced and rich. (1678 views)
Tasted by Gr8penut on 4/26/2019 & rated 91 points: More life than the 2006, more fruit and finish! (1428 views)
Tasted by JGirl on 12/26/2018 & rated 88 points: Still had flavor and body. (1286 views)
Tasted by duckyfufu on 12/25/2018: Aromas of blackberry and brambles. Ruby-garnet in color. A bit thin on the tongue, but rich with flavors of roasted red fruits, hint of spice on the finish. Should be perfect with beef roast! (970 views)
Tasted by rcurry on 12/10/2018 & rated 85 points: Old but a little sour for my taste. Not smooth finish. (1057 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 6/23/2018: Was drinking pretty flat initially - took a while to open up. These aren't really improving with age and aren't going to age much longer. Drink up! (1540 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 4/14/2018 & rated 90 points: My last bottle, enjoyed better each time. Seems a little washed out, or as I read, medium in depth. Just a good cab. (1511 views)
Tasted by merlot78 on 1/15/2018 & rated 91 points: My last bottle.
The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), cherry and vanilla. It tastes like black currant (cassis), raspberry, cherry, dust, vanilla and oak. The body is medium/full. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.
I think this could have lasted a few more years. (1599 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 12/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Blackberry jam, smooth as silk. (1569 views)
Tasted by merlot78 on 11/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Excellent and has a lot of life left. (1612 views)
Tasted by tom_wine on 3/15/2017 & rated 89 points: Forward fruit profile with dense, rich blackberry, currant and cherry flavors; dash of euculyptus and white pepper. Lingering finish and fine tannins to forecast (2538 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 2/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Powerful, dark, and brooding, this flaunts a bouquet of black currants, fancy oak, and licorice over secondary nuances of balsam and tar. The full bodied palate is integrated and has a coquettish piquancy about it, showing black fruit flavors, ample tannin, attractive richness, and lovely bottle age. A note of espresso laces the long finish. As complete and delicious as it gets. (2376 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 8/8/2016 & rated 88 points: PnP. This was a decent gutsy cab. Dark fruit with plenty of tannin and acid. A bit rough around the edges but tasty and interesting. (3432 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 7/26/2016 flawed bottle: Corked (TCA) :-( (3303 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 5/22/2016 & rated 91 points: decanted and poured after a quick 15-30 minutes on mothers day 2016. wife and i both loved it. very enjoyable - very californian - very smooth and plenty of fruit with very soft tannins. (3598 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 3/25/2016 & rated 92 points: From magnum- great fruit, needed about 30 min to open up- very good balance and the age has rounded this out nicely. Average finish. Still a full bodied wine that's in its prime and will likely hold for a few more years before fruit begins to fade. Good value. (2953 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 3/11/2016 & rated 91 points: Delicious!! (2785 views)
Tasted by Birged on 2/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Very dark red in glass, scents of herbs, slight woody, and green olives, berry flavors with very long dry smooth finish. (2133 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 10/17/2015 & rated 89 points: Was hoping for more depth, smoke, body. A little mellow for my taste. (2455 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 6/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Dry, austere, cherry, tobacco (2590 views)

Hall

Producer website
Since first working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. Now, Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination
in the Napa Valley—where winemaking excellence meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses. In 2005, Craig and Kathryn Hall unveiled a state-of-the-art winery amid the legendary Sacrashe Vineyard in the hills
of Rutherford that is dedicated to making single vineyard and limited-production wines. The Halls acquired the historic Bergfeld winery in St. Helena in 2003, and are merging history and innovation with the completion of California's
First Winery to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certification.

HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than five hundred acres of classic Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
As winegrowers, the Halls have a strong respect for the environment and a commitment to cutting-edge vineyard technology to yield the highest quality grapes.
Through meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards, HALL wines are able to express the unique and diverse character of Napa Valley’s soils and climate.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
