Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 86 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dcbell on 1/10/2024 & rated 88 points: Shifts a bit in the glass making it slightly hard to judge. Some stewed notes, but also brighter florals. The palate is still quite firm, this is probably best with food. Enjoyable overall but not a particularly easy wine. (244 views)

Tasted by pmik on 5/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Still going strong! (1364 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 1/20/2020: Another impressive showing and I’m not a fan of either 2003 or Saint-Cosme as such. Restrained, a nose of lavender, balsam, flowers. Slightly dry on the palate, tannins not fully resolved, in fact they become more pronounced with air. Red fruited, light, some tertiary notes. This is still young, believe it or not, wait. (1690 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 5/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Delicious fully mature Gigondas. (3820 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 2/5/2016 & rated 92 points: WIML92

Tasted non blind.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of licorice, black berries, light pepper notes and a hint of barnyard. Flavors of berries, raspberries and cherries. Tart acidity, medium tannin, medium to full bodied. Drink over the short term. (4151 views)
Tasted by sfowine on 6/24/2015: Sad to see the last bottle go. Still bright and lovely as the previous bottle 3 months ago. Don't think I'd want to hold much longer if I had more though. (3760 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 6/18/2015 & rated 90 points: Delicious dark and red cherry, lavender, olive and earth flavors ~ classic Gigondas. Drinking beautifully. (3438 views)
Tasted by behm0027 on 4/8/2015 & rated 90 points: Drinking beautifully right now; popped & poured. Anise, cherry, raspberry, and subtle floral notes. Medium bodied, enough acidity for great balance. Light tannins. Lovely. (3466 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 10/7/2014: Tuesday Night $20-$40 Double Blind (Bin 75): Dark core with bricking; dark fruit, fig, raspberry, rusty, almost peppery, leather, gingerbread, sarsaparilla, dark raspberry, soft resolved tannin, very ripe; seemingly well stored I would have expected this bottle to be done but then again Louis is a magician. (2067 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 7/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Very tasty gigondas, right in its peak drinking period. Ripe red cherry, lavender, earth, olives. Medium bodied, smooth and well balanced. Drinking nicely. (2070 views)
Tasted by wicozani on 3/11/2014 & rated 88 points: Decanted 40 minutes prior to pairing with lemon and garlic pork loin. The cork was extremely tight and came out in two pieces, with no signs of even tiny seepage. It poured a medium ruby in the glass with slightly thinning edges; better than our last bottle over a year ago. The nose featured some bright candied cherries, raspberry, red alpine currant and cured olives. The palate was quite bright, with excellent acidity, the tannins largely resolved but still a tiny bit present, and this was a nice match to our dinner. I remain convinced that this is over the top and should be consumed ASAP, even if this showed better than another bottle over a year ago. Glad to have finished these tonight, and looking forward to much more Saint-Cosme love! (2063 views)
Tasted by sfowine on 2/16/2014: Ended up sipping before dinner one night, and it was lovely. Tannins have mellowed out beautifully. Medium-full bodied. Doesn't show its high alcohol. (2283 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 1/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Pnp through a vinturri and let stand for about 15 minutes. Ruby-crimson in colour and has a small showing of bricking along the edges there; nose of dusty baked red fruits along with baking spice. The palate is getting some jammy raspberries and black fruits with hints of black licorice and some graphite; has a very nice finish to go along; some tannins are still evident. Have to say that I really like this one. (1998 views)
Tasted by rralls on 12/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice Sunday evening drink with some grilled chicken. (2102 views)
Tasted by yannhry on 11/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Belle bouteille.
(1901 views)
Tasted by pmik on 6/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Very nice and certainly alive! (1940 views)
Tasted by folsomarndt on 1/5/2013 & rated 92 points: Was expecting a harsh or dull wine after reading prior reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised...

A deep dark crimson color, starting to turn brickish. Light but inviting nose, with black fruit and lots of spice. Still plenty of firm tannins leading into a lengthy finish. Very enjoyable and still holding up quite well. (2167 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 10/20/2012: My last bottle out of 12. Had some more spice on the nose than I remember, and sweet vanilla on top of the usual SR notes. Otherwise these have been in decline for the last couple of years, but this was enjoyable, albeit on the simple side. (2594 views)
Tasted by wicozani on 9/7/2012 & rated 86 points: Gently decanted 60 minutes before pairing with braised beef short ribs, onions and stout. Much lighter than 4 years ago, with orange tawny edges. Secondary characteristics on display, and clearly on the downhill slope. That said, we always find something to enjoy in Ch. St. Cosme Gigondas, and this evening was no exception. This did improve a little the longer it was open, particularly with respect to color and nose. (2449 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 7/1/2011: A bit tired and quite frankly a boring bottle. No distinction, just fruit and alcohol. (3653 views)
Tasted by stephen locke on 5/27/2011 & rated 85 points: Better than the last bottle. Still has dry tannins and a hint of baked fruit but not so intrusive or harsh. Time may work here (3263 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 3/1/2011 & rated 89 points: This was good but probably not worth the money. A bit harsh and acking complexity. Some nice black raspberries and some cherries. Not a whole lot going on here. I doubt it ever gets much better. (3319 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 2/23/2011 & rated 92 points: Dallas 2nd Wednesday Group - February 2011 (Urbano Cafe, Dallas, Texas): WIML92+

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 2 1/2 hours.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of berries, a hint of smoke, a bit of camphor and some notes of wet stones. Flavors of berries, cherries and plums. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Hold at least another year to two years before opening. This bottle is still showing a little tight on the palate and nose. (3740 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
