Unfortunately our last bottle of this vintage. (207 views) | | Tasted by Alfaro on 10/16/2023 & rated 96 points: Outstanding! (303 views) | | Tasted by Tym4wine on 3/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Soft subtle aromas. Dark fruit with plummy hints. On the other side of the curve. Recommend drink now. (532 views) | | Tasted by JKbfdd on 12/21/2022 & rated 94 points: This has aged very well. While excellent now, likely nearing the ‘far side’ of the optimal drinking window. (646 views) | | Tasted by spectrumphoto on 5/7/2022 & rated 95 points: I love Howell Mtn. If you do to then just drink (1179 views) | | Tasted by cob on 6/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby with a dark fruit profile and cedar on the nose. Alcohol present which is the biggest detractor on score for me. Macerated blackberry on the palate, almost juicy and mouthwatering. Appropriate amount of acidity present with a moderate finish. Very nice wine that is definitely in its drinking window but certainly not over the hill for my palate. Short finshing..but still was good juice. Got better after 2 hour decant. (1626 views) | | Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 8/16/2020 & rated 91 points: From magnum. Olive notes stand out on Day 1 with plenty of cherry and anise lurking. Slightly astringent. Perfectly integrated on Day 2, fruit coming to the forefront. At peak now, will easily hold for another couple of years under proper storage. (1444 views) | | Tasted by WineGuyFL on 4/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Last bottle. It was better than some bottles I drank over the last 4 years.....over which time the experience was erratic. That contrasts with a consistent and very good experience before that. I would be a drinker of this one. (1475 views) | | Tasted by WineGuyFL on 9/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Good, but not quite as good as it once was. (1693 views) | | Tasted by SCM Fan on 9/6/2019 & rated 94 points: Scents of dark fruits, one whiff and you can tell this is a mountain cabernet. At the rim, still almost purple. Taste: Blackberry, Cassis, graphite. Big mountain cabernet still at 13 years. Close resemblance to Dunn HM Cab. After 4 hours, the fruit faded, would drink sooner than later. 1st bottle of half case I bought for ~$40. What a deal. (1642 views) | | Tasted by knorthrip on 8/30/2019 & rated 91 points: PNP. Nice mature cab. Deep red with paler rim and med+ stained med+ tears. Clean cassis, blackberry, and strawberry with notes of potting soil, green pepper, hint of olive, and pink flowers. Baking spice and toast. Med acidity, med+alcohol, med+ tannin. Truncated finish, med complexity. Well integrated. Strangely dark and brooding on the palate with some bright notes. (1425 views) | | Tasted by rocknroller on 8/10/2019 & rated 88 points: Very dark purple/red color. From magnum. Small pour. This was huge, over ripe black fruits, blackberry liqueur, port like. Was disappointed by this showing. (1802 views) | | Tasted by Mossrose on 6/29/2019 & rated 94 points: One of the few wines from Howell Mountain that I was able to purchase for $40 a bottle, and a superb example of why Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons command and get premium prices. A powerful full bodied wine highly structured by firm tannin and vivid acidity. Dark, dense, and concentrated fruits of black currants, blackberry, and black cherry. Beautifully ageworthy and readily improves for decades. At 13 years old, more integrated, smooth, seamless, and layered. (72 views) | | Tasted by globulen on 6/22/2019 & rated 89 points: Opened, decanted for two hours. Enjoyable enough but I found the alcohol overwhelming on this one. (953 views) | | Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 5/5/2019 & rated 93 points: Detailed notes not taken. Very big, rich, and now well-rounded. Will remain in perfect drinking form for 3-5 yrs and take on its pleasant older CA cab notes after that. (1078 views) | | Tasted by vinodolphin on 4/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Last of these and a treat as always. (1049 views) | | Tasted by cadamson on 3/24/2019: Very good. Nicely balanced. Very pleasant to drink. Went well with Prime Tenderloin. At peak I would guess. (1168 views) | | Tasted by SudeshB on 3/16/2019: Still a very balanced wine (991 views) | | Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 2/11/2019 flawed bottle: From magnum, corked... maddening! Can think of no other consumer segment where this level of defects would be allowed or tolerated. 2 mags and 1 btl left. (1071 views) | | Tasted by tfharris on 1/5/2019 & rated 92 points: Big reward for waiting for this gem. Big mountain cab. Enjoy if you got some. (1187 views) | | Tasted by WineGuyFL on 12/9/2018 & rated 93 points: My last 2 bottles of this one were way off after a string of really good experiences. I have no explanation as this bottle is more or less back to where it used to be. Wine can be a real mystery. (1196 views) | | Tasted by WineGuyFL on 3/14/2018 & rated 92 points: My earlier tastings of this one were right in line with other reviews, with number ratings us to 94 or so. This bottle and the last one have been a little off from that experience. Not as deep and complex as before. Who knows why? It is what it is. | Ladera Producer website2006 Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain - aged for 21 months in 49% new French oak barrels with the remainder one, two and three year old French barrels - fermentation lengths on average were 13 days with native yeasts contributing to over 2/3 of the fermentations; wines pressed at or before dryness with no extended fermentations; unfiltered and unfined - 15 different vineyard blocks of which most were planted in 1997 - bottled on August 11, 2008Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Howell Mountain Howell Mountain |
