Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by RockinCabs on 5/31/2021 & rated 89 points: Nose: Blackberry, leather and a bit of pencil. Browning notes that were a bit distracting. Palate: Nice red berry fruit, raspberries, mint and leather. Just not giving the complexity or balance of prior bottles. Finish: red fruit, blackberry tannins and some dry herbs.

This bottle seemed to be reaching the end of its peak window. I suggest drinking up. (2786 views)
Tasted by rfras on 7/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly vibrant and still showing classic Bordeaux flavors and style. Slight decant is helpful as the wine was slightly tight when opened. (3218 views)
Tasted by Ray852 on 4/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Perfect cork, not sponge. Dark red with brick rim which indicate its age. Consumed after uncork 1.5 hr. Cassis, raspberry, cedar, tobacco, herbs and spice. Intensity and delicious fruit that is deep and concentrated. Medium plus tannin and acidity. Amazing quality. Drink now. The fruit was faded after 3 hrs. (3339 views)
Tasted by Poisey on 4/11/2020 & rated 92 points: Herbs and root stock in this elegant old bordeaux. Not decanted. Smooth with lots of acidity on the finish. The nose here is enticing it just draws you in. Light and elegant profile with a dry finish. Drink now. 92 pts. (3341 views)
Tasted by timcos1987 on 12/7/2019 flawed bottle: Unfortunately my bottle of 1986 Mouton Baronne Philippe was way overdue. Decant it for a couple of hours didn't do the job. (3630 views)
Tasted by ATL on 8/19/2018: Finally ready. Much like 1975, took forever to resolve tannins, but lovely now. Great nose, balanced pallet, really nice. No rush, but ready. (3093 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 12/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Nose: Classical pauillac nose of blackberry, cherry, tobacco and pencil. Perfumed and light with good wood notes. Palate: Classy, middle weight and lifted on the palate. Sweet velvety fruit still with acidity and tanin in great balance. Red fruited cherry/strawberry with blackberry fruit leather, tobacco, graphite and minerality on the palate. Finish: violets, red berries, tobacco and pencil shavings.

This is a great wine. A touch behind a prior bottle but remains a great Pauillac. (3661 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 10/17/2017 & rated 91 points: Subtle nice sort of velvety wine. I guess this would be called "well into its tretiary phase"... Nothing is in your face - subdued, but very aristocratic style. Like it. (3884 views)
Tasted by PEKB on 10/14/2016 & rated 93 points: Bordeaux 1986 single blind tasting at Grappe, Stockholm. With Mr Carl-Jan Granqvist and Mr Johan Edström.
Floral and animalistic, nice roundness to it. Ready. (6273 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 10/12/2016 & rated 92 points: Fint mogen Bordeaux med fin frukt, svampskog, häststall och tobak. Ett relativt lätt, mjukt och tillgängligt vin som nog är mitt i sin peak. (5830 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/21/2014 & rated 86 points: Very astringent, tannic, a little bitter, dry. (10281 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 6/9/2014 & rated 93 points: Solid Pauillac in a rustic style with good age on it. Certainly improved with a couple hours in the decanter; lost some of its initial surliness and knit together nicely. Good choice by Phil - a pleasant surprise. (9793 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 6/7/2014 & rated 93 points: Casual Bordeaux Dinner w/Boston Group (Boston): Nose: Blackberry, Cherry, Leather, Violet and Lavender notes. The florals were gorgeous on this wine. Palate: Charming and velvety in the mouth with Red Fruit, leather, tobacco and hints of pencil. Finish: Nicely resolved, but not too long. Has the sense of an old library in the finish with some Leather, Flower and Cherry notes.

Curious wine that improved quite a bit with some decanting. Upon opening the wine seemed to be mostly red fruit with a bit of generic "old Bordeaux" character, however the structure and nuance came out with about 2 hours of decanting. These 86's really are hanging in there well even at this level. Over achiever for sure. (7405 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 6/7/2014 & rated 94 points: Thank you, Phil for the upside surprise of the night! This was really lovely, and I'm just going to ibid both of your comments for efficiency because it's late and I'm tired :) Though, I will add my own original content: you are underselling how much it both changed dramatically and also improved in the glass - it developed a very lovely soft, sweetness that was beyond delightful. My first taste of Pauline, may it not be the last! (8815 views)
(8020 views)
Tasted by adanacsim on 6/4/2013 & rated 92 points: This wine is still drinking well and was a favorite of the group among a number of wines consumed at a dinner. (4237 views)
Tasted by julianmci on 9/12/2011 & rated 90 points: Following previous reviews I decanted and left for just over an hour. Possibly past it's premium drinking dates, but retained a fruity, full taste. Enjoyable.
The wine looks Ruby colored.
The legs are Medium. (9257 views)
Tasted by rfras on 3/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Classic Bordeaux. It is probably a year or two past its prime. The wine was decanted for an hour before tasting. Nose was more barnyard then fruit, but that passed quickly. The wine still showed good color only a moderate clearness around the edges but no serious bricking. The wine still has some sweet red fruit flavors although more muted than a few years ago. Tannins are well integrated and the finish was soft and smooth and left me wondering if I held it to long. If it is in your cellar don't wait long to open. (12531 views)
(2249 views)
Tasted by gr8fl1 on 4/28/2008 & rated 88 points: Much better than the last bottle. Cork fully soaked through but in good condition. Let breathe about 1 hour. Much fuller and brigher fruit, finish longer and more impressive nose. I'd rate this an 88. (14644 views)
Tasted by gr8fl1 on 3/29/2008 & rated 84 points: cedar and sandlewood nose, medium fruit and not much finish. Totally mature, wish I drank it 2-3 years ago. Have 2 bottles left will consume in next 30-60 days. (13980 views)
Tasted by wstwine on 10/13/2007 flawed bottle: Oxidized (13505 views)
Tasted by JasonD on 1/1/2004 & rated 91 points: There was a slight hint of barnyard that blew off after about 15 minutes. At that time it opened up to reveal cedar, cherry and a slight hint of vanilla. This wine is still holding up and could last at least 3 more years, probably closer to 8 more. (13297 views)
 Tasted by Henman on 4/6/2003: N: soft,ripe fruit,cassis,barnyard.
P: smooth,perfect balance/acidity,nice fruitiness.
My personal favorite of the flight. (7667 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 5/6/2000 & rated 90 points: An easy afternoon with close friends; Bordeaux; Pauillac (@ BV): Very dark. Smoky bouquet with oak and currants. Same in the taste. Very juicy and a lot of sweetness. This is a very good wine at its peak and with enough power/tannin to last for one or two years longer. (12631 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
