Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 65 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by sirpat00 on 5/18/2024 & rated 94 points: An intense nose with dense sourcherry fruit, but complemented by darker elements of fig or plum aswell as sweet rhubarb. Initially thick meaty base, but moving in the background. Minerlal notes of cool rock and light oaky accents. The palate almost antithetical with much lighter and fresher red berry fruit. Pure sourcherry and rhubarb. Well-strucutred with a soft texture, perfectly balanced acidity and consistent weight into the finish. (551 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 5/7/2024 & rated 92 points: Crystalline fruit quality with flavours of blueberry and raspberry. There was pleasing acidity, a savoury entry but sweetness developed on the mid-palate through to the finish. Creamy, soft and rich-textured after half an hour or so in the glass this developed real complexity with a dark fruited finish. Top notch. CHP 92 pts (755 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 5/4/2024 & rated 95 points: Sour cherry and ripe raspberry fruit, partially confit in style. Also rhubarb top notes. Meaty and herbaceous base. Appealing spicy and floral (rose petals) overlays. Fresh, nicely intense and fruit-forward palate. Juicy with soft tannin that still have a pretty firm grip. Nice acidity, mid-palate presence and a smoky sour cherry finish. This is a complete wine with the Drouhin handwriting all over it. While good to go now, I would decant 1h at least or cellar for 3-5 years for peak performance. (804 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 4/28/2024 & rated 91 points: Ripe red cherry flavors with orange acidity following. There is some rose, raspberry, mushroom and fennel notes. The finish is mostly oaky vanilla with orange acidity with a little too much alcohol. (1264 views)
Tasted by Gnome on 4/26/2024 & rated 90 points: Some vanilla notes. Nice but generally unremarkable, especially for the price. (1209 views)
Tasted by djsaunde on 3/31/2024 & rated 92 points: Red cherries and rhubarb, red flowers, mushrooms, earth, herbs, light oak influence, vanilla, delicate tannin, medium body, long finish. Just delicious and the acid is really nice. Made in a riper style than what I expected, but not overly so. (1666 views)
Tasted by asplatt19 on 3/3/2024 & rated 93 points: Let it open up for 30-60 minutes. Fresh cherries. Better paired with food (like most wines) (2311 views)
Tasted by jepstein4031 on 3/2/2024 & rated 87 points: We felt like this was a bit flabby and over-extracted. More California than Oregon. Relatively low acidity. Disappointing. Maybe it’s the vintage. We were enjoying these a few years ago. (2031 views)
Tasted by Greyowl72 on 2/25/2024 & rated 91 points: Purchased 6 bottles in April 2023. They’ve been in my cellar since.
Color- ruby. Clear
Nose- shy. Berries. Cherry. Oak
Palate- great tannin/ acid balance. Cherry. Raspberry. Cedar.
Paired with coq au vin and mushrooms.

Great food wine. Will probably improve a bit over the next couple of years. (2096 views)
Tasted by uncledude on 2/22/2024 & rated 94 points: Not decanted or aerated, wine was consumed over 3 hours with company. Tight nose at first, primarily cherry. Cherry dominance continues on the palate with medium plus acidity and medium alcohol. Fruit is very fresh and juicy. After the first 30 minutes, catching more fennel and floral notes both on the nose and palate, along with a light oak and coke/vanilla note. Persistent finish with low, but very fine, tannins. Very balanced.

Paired with a filet, broccolini, baked potato, Serrano wrapped asparagus and bacon wrapped dates. Wine outshined them all. Jumped the gun in opening this one, but excited about trying it again over the next few years. (1764 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 2/17/2024 & rated 88 points: I’m in full agreement with sboyle’s note below. Purchased at Safeway in Maui for easy condo dishes. Not impressed. Too much oak overwhelming any nuance for me. I’ve never had an “aha moment” with Domaine Drouhin Oregon. (2068 views)
Tasted by DogtorKurt on 2/15/2024 & rated 92 points: Really good!!! (1426 views)
Tasted by sboyle on 2/10/2024 & rated 88 points: Notes of jolly rancher cherry, rose and vanilla. A high level of alcohol is clearly evident on the aroma and palate. The finish is harsh and astringent. With time the finish should round out, but the high alcohol level puts the wine out of balance. (1413 views)
Tasted by ralstenm on 1/31/2024 & rated 98 points: Stunning rose color in glass. Floral bouquet, red and blueberry fruits, cooking spices. Balance of tanins and acidity is perfect! Doesn’t get much better! (1769 views)
Tasted by Gr8penut on 1/20/2024 & rated 92 points: Great color and taste for a rather inexpensive wine. (1886 views)
Tasted by Berk_The_Caretaker on 1/10/2024 & rated 88 points: Typical Oregon PN. Muted nose, lacking intensity. Good acidity, strawberry, marshmellow. Vanilla from the oak sticks out a bit. Poor QPR. (2060 views)
Tasted by jyensan on 1/5/2024 & rated 92 points: Outstanding! Agree with total Burgundian nose! Well balanced, bright red fruit, earth and a little funk. Long finish. Will improve with age. Going back for more! (1969 views)
Tasted by raydawgone on 1/1/2024 & rated 95 points: Final holiday bottle! Nose of fresh, ripe picked cherries topped with heavy cream & wet stone scent. Medium weight, lush red berries with singed herbs on medium finish. For young age, drank well on 1st night and even better on 2nd. Drink now or hold 2-4 years. Fantastic! (2045 views)

Tasted by Chris@77 on 12/8/2023 & rated 93 points: This bottling is labeled "Dundee Hills" which is the estate wine. Burgundian nose (like pornography, when I smell it, I know it), surprisingly soft. Flavorful classic pinot notes with richness and compexity. Darkish ruby, med-full body. Good finish. Wonderful wine in my view. It was $38 and change but I moved too slowly to try it, now $42 and change and out of stock. Failed. 93 but this should move higher over time in my view. (2105 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 11/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted for over an hour. Aromas of cranberry, strawberry, cherry, earth and mushroom. Flavors of cherry, strawberry, earth, currant and hint of cranberry. Ends with a nice finish of 25+ seconds with cherry and strawberry notes. Took some coaxing to get the fruit out but was quite nice once it did. Tows line of new world and old. (1994 views)
Tasted by Exarsi on 11/18/2023 & rated 91 points: Too fruit forward to be Burgundian, too restrainted to be New World. I enjoyed the tension and balance immensely but could see how someone favoring either camp would be disappointed for the lack of commitment. The nose is bursting with ripe strawberries and bright red cherry. This gives way to sweet spices, chocolate and vanilla. Alcohol felt very in balance at cellar temp but ran hot as the bottle warmed on the counter. There's sufficient acid to age for 5 years but this Dundee Hills bottling is excellent right now. Highly recommend with mushroom pizza despite the lack of tertiary notes. (1856 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 11/9/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium, bright ruby red in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & cranberries with overtones of spices notes of cloves & some floral notes, earthy/dusty, minerals, mushrooms, some cola notes, herbs & an ever so slight hint of oak/vanilla in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of red cherries, strawberries & cranberries with spices, mushrooms, minerals, herbs & a touch of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present although it will develop further with an additional aging. (2289 views)
Tasted by melzar on 11/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Good effort from Drouhin's North American venture. More Burgundian in style than most West Coast Pinots, but the copious fruit shows through. I'll take a Mt. Jefferson Pinot Noir from Cristom over this for similar $$$. Over priced for what you get. (2028 views)
Tasted by Takao on 11/3/2023 & rated 86 points: Deep ruby color. Med(+) aromas of black cherry, vanilla, charred wood, cinnamon, raspberry, strawberry, perfume. Med(+) body, dry, high alcohol, soft, low tannins, long finish. A lot softer and more oak influence compared to what I recall for the 2019 vintage, but this bottle has travelled with me over 2 flights with some temp fluctuation so it could be condition. Alcohol sticks out a bit too much to me. It’s not as good as 2019. Oak is not yet integrated imo, so I’d wait a few years at least, but I’m unsure if balance between alcohol and fruits gets better over time. (1729 views)

Domaine Drouhin Oregon

Producer website

Domaine Drouhin has been on the viticultural cutting edge in Oregon since their first vintage in 1988, and continues to set the pace.

Winemaker Véronique Drouhin-Boss' roots go deep into her family's 13th century cellars under the streets of Beaune, the heart of Burgundy. She represents the fourth generation of winemakers from this venerable wine family of France, but it is here in Oregon that her skills and passion are bringing forth some of the most sublime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced anywhere. With centuries of Burgundian winemaking experience flowing through her blood, Véronique has lovingly crafted every drop of wine produced at Domaine Drouhin Oregon since the first vintage in 1988.

Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Our winemaker extraordinaire produces elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on both sides of the Atlantic.

Véronique Drouhin-Boss, the fourth-generation winemaker of the Drouhin family, has lovingly crafted every drop of wine produced at Domaine Drouhin Oregon since our first vintage in 1988. She also now oversees the winemaking at Maison Joseph Drouhin in Burgundy, producing some of the world's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines on both sides of the Atlantic.

Véronique's interest in wine and the family business began when she was young, and blossomed under the tutelage of father Robert Drouhin. In 1986, she graduated from the University of Dijon with an advanced degree in enology, and decided to venture to Oregon to expand her experience and learn more about the fledgling industry that was beginning to take root in the Willamette Valley. Véronique interned that year with Adelsheim Vineyards, Bethel Heights, and Eyrie. She has returned to Oregon every year since then to capture the essence of what nature provides in our unique estate vineyards.

In many ways, Véronique embodies the essence of Pinot Noir -- spirited, graceful, and feminine. Her wines at Domaine Drouhin have always been hallmarked by elegance, finesse, purity, and the capacity to improve gracefully with age.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
