Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 221 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BobHatcher on 5/5/2024 & rated 92 points: Had this with teriyaki steak tips on the grill and it was magnificent. Immediate blueberry flavor. Blue and black fruit, very well organized. Very little secondary or tertiary flavors. This one's a keeper. Normally we decant cabs, especially young ones like this but we didn't have time but the tannins were smooth as silk. (457 views)
Tasted by O’Duinn on 3/30/2024 & rated 93 points: Did a comparison tasting with the 2018 over the course of a meal with appropriate decanting and breathing beforehand. Both are well built delightful wines where the 2018 carries more tannin and grape while tilting less into the dark fruit and “boldness” of the 2019. Both wines are a success and the taster makes their choice on personal preference. (1325 views)
Tasted by MateusPetrus on 3/23/2024 & rated 85 points: Too sweet for me, but for most at the party it was the best of the ten wines I opened. Each to his own. (1291 views)
Tasted by Stampeder on 3/8/2024 & rated 92 points: We enjoyed this bottle. Dark fruits, with a hint of mineral and spice. It is a big and dark wine with rounded and deep flavors. It does lean a little sweet.

Maybe we had lower expectations because other Hope labels have been a major disappointment. This lived up to its billing.

Agree with other reviews about this not being one to age. (1364 views)
Tasted by moorewine3 on 2/14/2024 & rated 92 points: Excellent decanted about 1 hour, and enjoyed with beef filet, broccoli, and grilled potatoes - Valentine dinner. (1590 views)
Tasted by FaheyAndSons on 1/26/2024 & rated 86 points: One big fruit bomb. Too much sugar for me. Wanted to like it, tried to like it but I couldn’t do it. Wife enjoyed it though so it did not go to waste (1804 views)
Tasted by NJH1122 on 1/4/2024 & rated 79 points: New style, seems like concentrate additives. (1907 views)
Tasted by O’Duinn on 11/23/2023 & rated 90 points: Decanted and breathed, moderate sediment, hit form after about 50 minutes of breathing, went quite well with turkey, roast vegetables, stuffing; As others have said - large fruity (berries) wine with consistent smooth flavor, delightful (2440 views)
Tasted by moorewine3 on 10/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Great with NY Stripe steak, mushrooms, & mashed potatoes (2769 views)
Tasted by talid on 10/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Deep purple color. Great nose of dark berries, herbs, oak. On the palate, acidity is a little weak and cannot balance the high abv and some perceived sweetness. Very enjoyable now but not one for long term aging. (2455 views)
Tasted by Srabkin90 on 10/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour for Thanksgiving weekend. I have enjoyed the 2020, and I preferred it to this vintage.

A bit of a fruit bomb on this bottle with pie crust, blackberry, stewed dark fruit and vanilla. Subtle oak, but most prominent flavors were confectionery fruit.

Med+ bodied, very sweet, smooth and slightly flabby.

For the price, I would skip this in future, but still enjoyable depending on the mood. This is a well crafted wine, but not as much for my taste. (2287 views)
Tasted by BUSSIERES WINE ROOM on 9/9/2023 & rated 70 points: Did Not Enjoy. Not worth the money. (2389 views)
Tasted by K&J on 8/4/2023 & rated 75 points: I agree with killerjones on 5/23/2023. Something is not right with the wine in that it is pretty obvious it is altered or overextracted. Way too much is going on to be a pure wine. (2196 views)
Tasted by dlf-48 on 6/29/2023: Drank very well lots of real rich fruit, smooth one of my favorite wines (2255 views)
Tasted by mithomps on 6/29/2023 & rated 90 points: Very good. Great legs and flavor. Do not agree with the 95 reviews . (2003 views)
Tasted by Deandarko on 6/20/2023: Very smooth. Moderate body. (2465 views)
Tasted by moorewine3 on 5/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Gave as a gift. Enjoyed this wine multiple times and always liked it. Graded a 94 based on previous consumption. I'd purchase it again. (2665 views)
Tasted by KillerJones on 5/23/2023 & rated 75 points: The sad part here is the fruit is actually good, right? But the glass staining, color & nose make it pretty obvious something else is added here - even the next day, the juice was exactly the same.

On the palate, you can tell the fruit was ripe - tannins are not noticeable. But the level of sweetness is off the chart - making other notes impossible to detect.

Could not finish.

I know they are not illegal - they are grape concentrates, after all....but why not admit Mega Purple or Ultravin 8000 was used? We will see more of this as the climate changes, folks. (3156 views)
Tasted by Goofienewfy on 5/21/2023 & rated 93 points: A great bottle consistently. Clearly could go another 5-10 yrs. Nose is plum, blackberry and some spice. Taste is bold and finish smooth. (2100 views)
Tasted by moorewine3 on 5/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Excellent with venison, pasta salad, an truffle chips. (2075 views)
Tasted by Rbhan12 on 5/4/2023 & rated 86 points: Part of a blind tasting of "steakhouse wines." Paired with NY Strip steak, mushrooms, green beans, and smashed potatoes.

This worked very well with the food, though the extraction and alcohol was still evident. After the meal, I couldn't take another sip. Goopy, rich, extracted, residual sugar, high alcohol, chocolate oak everywhere. Not much structure either. The shame of this wine is you can actually tell this is decent fruit, but so incredibly ripened that any interesting character is all but gone.

Drink now if you want, I wouldn't. Maybe I'm being harsh but this is a generous 86. (2565 views)
Tasted by Acove on 5/4/2023 & rated 87 points: Aired out for an hour or 2. Nose had extremely dark fruits like blackberry pie and almost prunes. Palate was very concentrated but goopy and heavy with little acid or tannin to hold it up. Even through the heavy body I was able to detect the etoh. I can see why some casual wine drinkers would enjoy this but it is just so very tiresome and not my style. Wouldn't pay the premium for this. (1964 views)
Tasted by Cwbailey on 5/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Very fruity, tannic. I bet it would have aged welll… in my belly now! (1825 views)
Tasted by Bartleys best on 4/16/2023: Liked (2353 views)
Tasted by AboveAvgBro on 4/13/2023 & rated 85 points: If you love Caymus, this wine is the Paso version of that… heck it might even be better.

But I do not like Caymus. I think overly extracted juice like this is a detractor, not a benefit. Hardly any nuances or complexity to be tasted. (2121 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
