Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 145 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mojowine on 4/18/2024 & rated 93 points: Really good on Day 2. Classic RR red fruit - cherries, raspberries. 20 second finish. Tartness and fine tannins making me drool but balanced with the sweetness of the fruit. First KB I've had in several years. Great surprise. (709 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 4/5/2024 & rated 92 points: very good. Nice dark berry fruit (788 views)
Tasted by TomTom on 2/4/2024 flawed bottle: Maybe I’m sensitive, but this seems like there is a ton of VA. The alcohol is also a little high for my tastes. Probably flawed. (1374 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 1/23/2024 & rated 93 points: Similar tasting notes to previous bottle! (1399 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 11/23/2023: PNP. Drank over several hours. Needed some air to open up. Nice aromatics, matched by the palate. Dark red fruit, raspberry, cranberry, cola, vanilla. Ripe fruit, bit of spice from the alcohol. Accessible now with short decant. Nicely made in the modern style, if a bit pricey for what it is. (1700 views)
Tasted by nocowine on 11/4/2023: Excellent. Needs a little time to open. (1595 views)
Tasted by GWELMO on 10/21/2023 & rated 90 points: very smooth with some strength at the end (1754 views)
Tasted by atbarbar on 10/13/2023 & rated 89 points: Sweet nose of vanilla, spices, like mace and myrtle-leaved orange tree (chinotto), kirsch cherry, alcohol. The same cherries on the palate with alcohol, drinks almost like a fruit port wine. Same nice spicy background and final of the myrtle-leaved orange tree. Sweet palate. Earthy undertones. Nice aromatics pleasant but way too alcoholic. The wine is ready to go. (1493 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 9/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Lovely Pinot that’s just starting to develop the nuances of aged Pinot. (1483 views)
Tasted by ELH on 8/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Ripe, rich fruit. Smooth. (1201 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 8/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Wonderfully rich, well balanced with a long finish. Drinking very well. (1156 views)
Tasted by denniswdern@gmail.com on 7/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium ruby color. Pronounced aromas of cherry and spice. Pronounced flavors of cherry, spice and a slight amount of earth. Medium to high acidity and alcohol. Long finish. (1300 views)
Tasted by peterg2004 on 6/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Pmg great (1315 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 6/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Previous bottle was off! This bottle was more classic KB. Ripe dark red cherry and dark berry flavors with spice and oaky notes on the nose and smooth palate with a moderate long finish. (1239 views)
Tasted by PVJC on 2/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent. Typical RR brighter fruit relative to the Sonoma Coast, a great alternative for the right meal/mood. (2290 views)
Tasted by nkirsch on 2/8/2023 & rated 92 points: very good KB appellation wine. a little heavier and earthier than the Sonoma coast so a nice compliment in style (2147 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 2/3/2023 & rated 91 points: Perhaps an off bottle (first of the 2018's), but just strikes me as light bodied and thin for a KB! Perhaps a KB-lite! Not what I expected having enjoyed KB since the 2003 vintage. (1869 views)
Tasted by jjtemple on 1/11/2023 & rated 91 points: 노즈나 팔렛이 평타 이상이나 가격에 비해 특출난게 없음 좋게 말하면 밸런스가 좋음 (2164 views)
Tasted by maxima on 11/26/2022 flawed bottle: DÉVIANTE! (2925 views)
Tasted by DrLes on 10/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Aged perfectly at this point, a classic KB and classic RR (2139 views)
Tasted by Seneg on 8/7/2022 & rated 90 points: drinks nicely now. straight forward with strong fruit. simple texture, not sure it will improve much with thime (2653 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 5/29/2022 & rated 94 points: Sour cherry, dark cherry and rhubarb fruit. A bit of earth and meaty flavors along with an alluring floral overlay. Sweet seasoning. impeccable balance and pure, precise fruit on the palate. The only downer was some heat that couldn‘t be masked, albeit only at elevated temperatures, and the texture felt a bit rough. That said, the palate had a nice sweetness to it. Didn’t decant but drank over 3 days and this showed pretty consistently throughout. I think decanting doesn’t do much at this stage, but I do reckon 3-5 years of bottle age would definitely help to soften the edges. (3037 views)
Tasted by FeliceGordon on 5/1/2022 & rated 94 points: Delicious, complex, with cherry, plum and earthy undertones. (3466 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 4/3/2022 & rated 90 points: A nose of cherries and spice, medium amber in color. A medium to full bodied Pinot, with currants, cherries, dust and spice on finish, was very smooth. www.winelx.com (3155 views)
Tasted by hlatham33@gmail.com on 3/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Classic Russian River Valley Pinot (2893 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
