Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): Complex bouquet with flowers, white fruits and some honey. On the palate also complex with butter, minerals, pineapple, some fat in a positive meaning, pineapple, good acidity and some pleasant bitterness. Beautiful, full bodied and mature wine. Not a bit too old. Impressive! (1349 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 6/30/2022 & rated 87 points: Idealwine dinner: A very typical Rhone white that I didn't care much for. Nutty, heavy, and oxidative without much acidity, not compensated by depth and complexity that was evident in the Sorrel Rocoules a couple of weeks back. (1256 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 6/29/2022 & rated 90 points: Medium nose with flora, oily, white peach. Medium+ acidity. (913 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 4/4/2020 & rated 93 points: From 75cl, good cork, opened but not decanted 1 hour. Fabulous bottle. Thick rich candied lime and kumquat/tangerine peel scent with some very heady citrus blossom at the very end of the bottle. Thick-textured palate, with honey unctuousness and the bitterness of propolis, real structure and a high-wire act between implied sweetness and definite dryness. Fine grapefruit bitterness on the long finish. The sheer concentration is more reminiscent of an outstanding Grappa than a „mere“ wine. A bargain at the €35 paid, even the current auction price of €79 seems entirely reasonable for a bottle in good condition. 92-93P (2028 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 6/28/2018 & rated 92 points: From a Coravin sample. Very nice maturity and complexity with melon and peach . Very good balance and finish, an attractive wine ready to drink. Fruit very much present with more than decent acidity levels, overall a very good impression. (3013 views)
Tasted by Ebrim on 10/7/2017 & rated 92 points: short note - honey, nutts, salty, orange, yellow apples, concentrated, complex and quite intense with long finish. outstanding quality 92p (3042 views)
Tasted by KPB on 2/26/2017 & rated 84 points: Deep yellow. Nose of marmalade, citrus, hints of petrol. Maderized and a bit off on the palate. A bit hot. Drink up and probably serve with nuts, like sherry. (3729 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/2/2016: Rule the Rhone; 10/27/2016-11/3/2016 (Northern & Southern Rhone): Dried fruit, still has that nice spice characteristic, no oak, very interesting. It's aged quite well and was very enjoyable. (4916 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 7/5/2016 & rated 92 points: CDP Session (Rayas) (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, gold colour. Long legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of honey, almond nuts, hay and straw, oxidative notes. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol with heat, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honey, almond nuts, pineapple, some ripe peach, slight oxidative notes. Long oily finish.
Very good quality. Fruit not as forward as I would have preferred and the wine seems to be heading in a very tertiary direction. May have been even better 2-3 years ago. Drink up.
Blend of 20% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc, 20% Clairette, 20% Bourboulenc and 20% Picpoul. Vinified and aged in stainless steel tanks for 6 months. (4317 views)
Tasted by Ternest83 on 4/17/2016 & rated 93 points: Pale yellow/gold with bright full aromas of honey and fresh white flowers. Crisp acidity with balanced richness and weight from the alcohol. Palate of grapefruit and minerals. Very enjoyable full-bodied White CDP! This can probably be cellared for another 2-3 years. (2870 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 3/20/2016 & rated 91 points: WIML91

Tasted non blind.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Muted nose of camphor, tacl and yellow pear. Flavors of yellow pear and yellow apple. Medium acidity, medium body. Drink or hold. (2730 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 3/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Dorato. Al naso marazapane, albicocca e pesca gialla, pepe, finocchietto selvatico, tiglio, miele, kumquat candito, zenzero, resina. Bocca intensa, grassa, minerale (quasi salata). Tipicamente ammandorlato nel finale (2208 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 2/21/2016 & rated 91 points: Lemon gold color, clear with a very slight haze. The aromas are pear, tangerine, ginger, floral, and honey. The tastes are nutty, saline, honey, pear, tangerine, and woody notes. The finish is dry and offers length with nice acidity. (1990 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/20/2016 & rated 91 points: Definitely not as impressive as 2 years ago when we tried it at the Chateau and points back to our worry/theory that these wines are better when they have freshness in them (or at least we enjoy them more). This has now moved into well secondary with a few nice mushroomy notes. The characteristic Rhone "bitterness" and acidity are all there. Light waxy notes too. Still a very good wine don't get us wrong but not the beauty it once was.91 now vs 93 2 years ago. (1936 views)
Tasted by LARich on 11/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Drinking well but not likely to improve. (1682 views)
Tasted by Metroplex on 11/18/2015 & rated 92 points: All the information I's read about the aging ability of this particular Rhone white wine was correct. At 10 years old it was not heavily oxidised like most would be. Flavours of exotic fruit were present without the usual extreme nuttiness that evolves in Rhone whites. Still fresh but with that lovely Rhone fullness. Partnered with chicken in a cream and tarragon sauce. (1729 views)
Tasted by VeronicaXu on 7/9/2015 & rated 90 points: Medium lemon colour. Even more of those honey suckles, apricot. Very round. I told Paul I prefer the 2009 at this stage, 2005 is showing much more, but perhaps for me, quite difficult to imagine what kind of food it can go with.

Tasted at the domaine. (1962 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 6/12/2015 & rated 94 points: Really good. Wow. Rich, smooth. Textured and nuanced. This is sensational and not even close to being at full maturity. 94 tonight (1900 views)
Tasted by YCChung on 1/26/2015: Lively nose of Riesling-like notes of petrol and almost Ouzo-like nose: sweet almond, sweet spice, star anise, Cinnamon, fennel... last but no least ripe stone fruit and honey

Palate: orange zest, kumquat, stone fruit, good acidity, high alcohol (14.5%) medium to full body, fennel, anise, strong minerality, white flower, sugarcane juice, chrysanthemum tea, a bit bitter then sweet finish.

This 10 years old wine has developed some amazing secondary notes, need time to open up (in fact taste rounder and purer after 24 hrs), no a crowd-pleaser... but for those who enjoy the complexity of life... (2356 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 1/22/2015 & rated 92 points: Drank in Hong Kong
Nose of green fruit, marzipan and petrol. Nice balanced palate with a lot of complexity. Nice. (1971 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/17/2014 & rated 92 points: Much more impressive than last time - open on the nose, concentrated, marzipan, slightly floral, nuts, ripe fruit. Powerful on the palate, but balanced, great length. 91-93 (1969 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 11/17/2014 & rated 93 points: [J&B Rhone tasting] Rounder, sweeter, more open and perfumed than the 2011. Great stuff. 92-93 (2279 views)
Tasted by BordeauxBuff on 9/5/2014 & rated 95 points: Tasted at the chateau. This wine has come a long way since I've tried it a few years ago. It has gained some amazing complexity and secondary characteristics, while maintaining bright acidity and freshness.

Highly recommended! (2110 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 6/30/2014 & rated 95 points: Private Tasting with Vincent Avril at Clos des Pape (Chateauneuf de Pape): Beautiful burgundian nose of baked apples and subtle minerality. The wine has a great balance and I think its at the top right know, which lets me come to the conclusion, that Vincent Avrils white for my taste are best drunk after about 10 years. (2499 views)
Tasted by LARich on 5/4/2014 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous notes but time to drink. Another 2-3 years max (2270 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
