Tasted by Jag76 on 12/31/2023: seriously corked, cork was dry, wine undrinkable (286 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 7/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted. Clear deep garnet-blood red. Bordeaux-like, mellow, classic bouquet of red and black fruits and their liqueurs; tobacco, turned soil, forest floor, baked rhubarb pie, bay leaf, cardamom, eucalyptus. Full body, seamless, balanced, elegant. My #2, group's SECOND PLACE among reds tonight. (387 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 7/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted and shared w/wine group dinner. Lovely old mature Cabernet. Definitely some age on this puppy but still alive. Still some in there with the secondaries. A little dirty but fun to drink. Much better than the last bottle which seemed a bit thin. Notable bricking, little sediment. Tannins soft. Great QPR. (514 views)
Tasted by Racer117 on 7/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Old, elegant, and refined. Very enjoyable though in its twilight years. Minor funk, plenty of red fruit, touch of earth. Acid and tannins in check. Thanks to Whine-oh for sharing. (530 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 5/9/2022: J&A's bottle, a magnum, purchased for $99 at Costco in 1999 and stored cool/passive since. Deep maroon color with only minimal bricking, doesn't show its age. Great mature CalCab nose but very soft on the palate with almost no tannins. Still, fun and delicious. (1671 views)
Tasted by Bob and Joli on 10/23/2016 & rated 90 points: The earlier notes on this wine tell you what you need to know--the label and price set a high expectation that is not fully met. It's a good, solid wine, with old-world elements. Good, but not quite up to the hype. (6614 views)
Tasted by fredb on 10/16/2016: Purchased on release. Decanted off heavy crust in the bottle, but little sediment in the wine itself. Color was medium dark red with limited thinning. Aromas of currant, cherry, dried flowers, and a hint of tobacco. Palate has light red fruit character with currant and cherry carrying into a medium finish. This is nice old California Cabernet Sauvignon, but seems lacking in stuffing compared to its peers. Honestly earns its reputation as an underperforming flagship in this era. (5481 views)
Tasted by dlb291@pacbell.net on 1/11/2016 & rated 89 points: okay nose, medium body, tannins slightly harsh, not much left in the finish. average, average, average. drink, drink, drink. (6428 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 12/30/2015 flawed bottle: Overwhelmed by Brett like the last bottle. Not sure if bad luck or the vintage has simply degenerated. Barnyard and Band-Aid nose, clove palate. There's something underneath but it's too masked. (6355 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 12/14/2015 flawed bottle: Most pristine cork I've ever seen on a BVGDL this old, so we were disappointed that the bottle was flawed. Overpowering brett masked the hints of leather and chocolate and never faded over three hours. I hope the other two bottles are better. (5825 views)
Tasted by ppaluszewski on 8/15/2015 & rated 94 points: A good friend brought this over this past weekend. Surprised how much fruit was still there and how structured this still was. Lots of chocolate, earth, leather, and dark fruits with fine tannins throughout. This really surprised us and was arguably the highlight of the evening among some stiff competition, including other Napa wines from the early '90s and a 2001 Burgundy. If you don't believe that good Napa wines can age beautifully, try an older Georges. I typically open at the 10 year mark...this one makes me want to wait longer. 93-95 pts. PJP 2015. (2964 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 11/20/2014 & rated 91 points: Allowed to breathe in glass for one hour. Clear deep dark garnet - blood red. Classic profile of mature Napa cabernet with brooding bouquet of creme de cassis, cherry liqueur, underbrush, forest floor, fennel, hints of green tobacco, roasted nuts, and caramel. Similar on the palate, rich, ripe, generous, velvety and balanced, with mouthwatering acidity and lingering finish. (3931 views)
Tasted by bh4buffs on 7/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Beautiful garnet color, fruity nose, Classic Cabernet notes leading to a superb, smooth finish. Paired w/ grilled filet, roasted vegetables, and mashed potatoes. (3434 views)
Tasted by CabIsKing on 6/15/2014 & rated 89 points: Some red fruit, cedar and pencil lead on the nose. The fruit is weak on the nose. Thin on the palate with a short disjointed finish. Definitely showing its age. Drink up. (3498 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 10/26/2013 & rated 92 points: Low neck fill, excellent cork and capsule. Decanted for 40 minutes. Deep, youthful, cherry mahogany appearance. Attractive bouquet of mountain berries, black currants, leather, spice box, pencil lead, and whiffs of lavender and singed earth. The fresh, vibrant, palate had lots of black cherries, blackberries, currants, wisps of graphite minerality, and a long black fruit finish that picked up a note of peppery spice. Displayed good integration, richness, energy, and purity of fruit. Improved over the course of three hours. An elegant wine worthy of its name. (4465 views)
Tasted by sacprod on 2/5/2013: - Ruby color. It's high in alcohol - Bad
(5499 views)
Tasted by sacprod on 2/5/2013: - Ruby color. It's overly acidic with a medium body. Round texture. (4565 views)
Tasted by Mark on 9/15/2012 & rated 91 points: Six years since my last tasting, this bottle did not disappoint. Well aged and balanced, leather, spice box, cassis, drank well for four hours, a very nice bottle of wine. (5319 views)
Tasted by amitch4 on 7/5/2012: 85...this wine is tired. (5137 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 6/25/2011 & rated 92 points: Fill into neck, excellent capsule and cork. Decanted 60 minutes before tasting. Clear blood-ruby-garnet hue. Bouquet of meat juice, red fruit, and cedar. With another hour in the glass, the meatiness blew off, revealing a sweeter bouquet of pure fruit and wood. The wine actually showed best the following day under vacuum stopper, offering a classic bouquet of lavender, sweet red fruit, aromatic wood, touch of spice, seamless and elegant on the palate. Fully mature with no sign of tiring. (5725 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 3/13/2011 & rated 88 points: Balanced but tired.... (5110 views)
Tasted by philastem on 2/5/2011 & rated 91 points: Decanted through mesh (lots of sediment), directly from storage (56 degrees) - needed over an hour plus before it got going - really enjoyed it after it opened up, though seemed a little thin and past prime (5255 views)
Tasted by christerman on 12/26/2010 & rated 93 points: My last bottle. My companion was stunned that I even had this bottle, and then how good it still was. Had a 93 a week or two before this one. The 91 was better. Delicious though it clearly seemed to be weakening. (5064 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 5/8/2010 & rated 84 points: Opened and let sit, no decant. Drank about a hour after popping.. Dark red in color, minimal bricking. Barnyard funk on the nose that never (over 3 hours) blew off. Still some mild fruit on the palate but had to get past the nose.. Mostly secondaries left over, leather n earth. Resovled tannins with a nice mouthfeel. Still hard to enjoy over all. Past its prime? maybe so.. (5885 views)
Tasted by jgrapski on 1/27/2010 & rated 92 points: Just drank the last of these, still showing strong. No decant, tasted a little hot initially but that mellowed out quickly. Sweet fruit, medium body. (6011 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
