Community Tasting Notes (average 95.2 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Hppr Cellar on 10/22/2022 & rated 99 points: My wife would say 100. :). Drinking perfectly. Decanted for about 90 mins which was sufficient. Beautiful wine. Smooth and well balanced with a long finish. It’s all about the fruit (stewed plums and dark jam) although the age has allowed it to become extremely well integrated. (1332 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 11/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Score reflects the state of the wine after a few hours of air. First glass was still tight and a little intense, smoothed out a lot after that. Suggest a couple hour decant. (1742 views)
Tasted by wineholder on 7/23/2021 & rated 98 points: Quick 30 min decant does the trick (1736 views)
Tasted by Mdb1982 on 11/13/2020 & rated 97 points: One amazing wine! I’ve found that I enjoy Napa Valley cabs within the 7-10 year range, and this one falls right into to that age range.

This Cliff Lede cab does not disappoint. Very smooth, mellow tannins, well balanced, nice vibrant fruit flavor and acidity.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry (89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is indeed worthy of its name. Bottled perfection, it is an extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon offering floral, blackcurrant, boysenberry and hints of oak, forest floor and graphite notes, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and an exuberance, freshness and delineation that are remarkable. This amazing effort is the quintessential Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon that is Napa Valley’s version of Château Margaux. The finish just won’t quit. Kudos to proprietor Cliff Lede. This cuvée needs 3-4 years of aging, and should keep for 20-25. (2176 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 8/15/2019 & rated 91 points: Given the cost, expected more. Lots of bright fruit, but seems a little awkward. (2786 views)
Tasted by KeithSurg on 6/15/2019 & rated 95 points: Drinking beautifully. Big and rich with soft, velvety tannins. (2064 views)
Tasted by sdsull on 2/28/2019 & rated 97 points: All the structure, mouthfeel, fruit, finesse are there..... Just way too young to drink. Put em away and wait 7-10 more years. (1936 views)
Tasted by knlowery on 7/23/2018 & rated 95 points: Opened and decanted and enjoyed with a steak for dinner. Delicious red with a cornucopia of essences on the nose and the palette. Savored the wine into the evening . Delicious (2460 views)
Tasted by brucegolfer on 7/1/2017 & rated 94 points: Rich, dark fruits, well balanced. Should improve with age. (3133 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 4/18/2017: Secondary aromas and flavors are begging to emerge.
Orange rind, tomato paste, dark chocolate.
A pop of raspberry on the palate.
Polished and refined tannins lead to an extended finish.
Would give this a healthy decant or wait another 8-10 years. (2510 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 12/28/2015 & rated 94 points: More refined than previous vintages, but still buoyant, the '12 Poetry does not let one down. Black cherry, mint, crushed rock, teriyaki and granite. Distinct layers, which is a common thread this vintage. Long during the finish and focused, with a deep, rich colour. Drink 2017 - 2032. (4645 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 4/18/2015 & rated 96 points: California Tasting (Barrel Tasting and an slight older): Very fruity but complex. The varietals balance out the strong cabernet fruit. (4716 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 4/18/2015 & rated 93 points: 30th Addy Bassin's California Barrel Tasting (The Mandarin Oriental Hotel): 93+
Could see this way out doing the cabernet, sweet and needs air (5490 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
