Tasted by AussieRoddy on 10/15/2022 & rated 90 points: Still going perfectly well. Some early must and vinegar blew off after a 45min decant, and left a very well balanced and delicate wine with a little grenache pepper still poking through... thang god, this was the third i opened on the night, a 1999 Bordeaux and 2014 Rhone were both gone, turps.... this saved the day.  Tasted by sanjuanlewis on 11/25/2019 & rated 91 points: PnP. Great with pasta ad red sauce. Well balanced, slight tannins, fully integrated flavors. Drink up. (518 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 3/2/2019 & rated 90 points: Violets, prosciutto, stems, and red fruit on the nose. Nice concentration of sweet and sour juice on the palate with a deft aromatic acid touch at the back. Good with birria and green salad. 50 + 16 + 16 + 8 = 90. (642 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 1/12/2019 & rated 91 points: [2 day old bottle] Faded but still generous aromas of red cherry, black pepper, dried flowers. Sweet core of penetrating fruit on the palate, clear acid lattice at the back supporting a long fruit-driven finish. Really a lovely concluding wine for the evening with comte and roquefort. 50 + 17 + 16 + 8 = 91. (685 views)
Tasted by zut alors! on 8/31/2017 & rated 89 points: Much better than three earlier tastings (you can refer to two comments I made). The sulphur taste has completely dissipated. Opened 0ne hour prior to drinking. Now is drinking like a luscious full-bodied berry-filled grenache. Yay! (1316 views)
Tasted by F_&_M on 5/9/2017 & rated 89 points: Great wine and great value. (1370 views)
Tasted by PDXinSEA on 5/6/2017 & rated 88 points: Needed some air to flesh out. Shows some fading fruit, but has cranberry notes that I find quite appealing. A slight alcohol burn dissipated with time. With an hour+, this put on weight and a spice note complemented a Mediterranean roasted eggplant with onion, chiles, and lemon. At under $16, this was a fine QPR Garagiste buy. (1182 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/12/2017: Ripe fred fruits, its got power, just cracked, we'll see where it goes. (1305 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 10/19/2016 & rated 88 points: Dark garnet. Brambles, dark berries, a bit of alcoholic heat on the nose. Sweet core of concentrated juice from front to back, smooth tannins, long finish. Lots of good elements here, but overall a lack of integration and balance. 50 + 15 + 16 + 7.

I note that CO_ROOTS13 has exactly the same decrease in score since 2014 as I do, from a 90 to an 88. (1296 views)
Tasted by TallMikeWine on 6/6/2016 & rated 88 points: You could do worse on a Monday. Great fruit and acid, with just enough tannins to complete the trifecta. Buy a case at this price and drink it on Mondays. Maybe buy a steak to go with it. Boom. (979 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 6/6/2016: Blind tasted. I said Burgundy. (1073 views)
Tasted by CO_Roots13 on 10/5/2015 & rated 88 points: Nice everyday Grenache. The nose is very shy. The palette is a bit more expressive showing bright red fruit and earthy spice. Light in color, but a little more body on the juicy palette. Smooth texture with very fine tannins. The finish lingers a bit with some airy cherry scented dark chocolate notes. Good bottle that can easily be enjoyed on its own, or I could see it working well with grilled pork.

I'm not sure if I rated too highly on the prior bottles or they were that much better. I am certain that the nose was more expressive with the other bottles. (1498 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 8/27/2015 & rated 88 points: Translucent red orange color. Needs some air for funk to blow off. Light style with flavors of red berries and slate. Not much complexity but a nice summer drinker. (1501 views)
Tasted by zut alors! on 8/13/2015 & rated 85 points: I like it, but not a lot. First bottle had a strange sulfuric taste on all phaes of tasting. Second bottle, which I gave an extra hour in a carafe, left a slightly sulfuric taste on the finish. I disagree with the many comments about it being a light-boded wine. My two bottles were medium to heavy bodied. Somewhat long on the finish.
The wine looks violet colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like red currant and blackberry. It tastes like forest floor, petrol, game and alcohol/hot. The wine has smooth textureand finishes medium and has medium acidity. (1327 views)
Tasted by Richard123 on 7/1/2015 & rated 91 points: Either my last bottle was badly paired, or six months have worked some magic, because this bottle was fantastic. Lighter style, nice minerals, soft red berries. Went very well with pork chop and tomato-based sauce. (1237 views)
Tasted by zut alors! on 7/1/2015: very promising in the front of the mouth. Then an astringent taste - very peculiar - in the back of the mouth. Corked? Will not rate this one. I have 5 more bt to try. (1301 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 5/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Needs about 45 min of air. Grenache with substance. Wish I had a case. (1056 views)
Tasted by CO_Roots13 on 4/26/2015 & rated 91 points: Juicy and bright. A little unruley, but very expressive in all facets. Light red and quite clear, yet weighty and textural. Black pepper, brambly berry and a little meat on the nose. Rather big on the palette with loads of red fruit. Decent length on the finish.

Tasted by fitchbuck on 4/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Light-bodied, clear red. The wife enjoyed it, so I know it could please the masses; will pair with most non-redmeat dishes. (1172 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 1/25/2015 & rated 89 points: Pretty decent stuff. Medium bodied, lively with red fruits and a bit of pepper. Really nothing super special, just well made and easy to drink. Almost certainly would be a crowd pleaser. (1288 views)
Tasted by MadTownWine on 1/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Continued to get better over the two hours we drank it. (1299 views)
Tasted by scooterb60 on 1/3/2015 & rated 91 points: I was very surprised by this gem! Light color for a Grenache--almost looks like a Pinot. Very soft nose of berries with excellent balance and a medium finish. For the price, A STEAL (1234 views)
Tasted by CO_Roots13 on 12/20/2014 & rated 90 points: Strawberry, cherry and very subtle cola note on the nose. The palette echoes the nose with the addition of some red meat and a touch of heat on the mid. Nice texture with a smooth aromatic finish. Very pleasant bottle, but I think some age will bring out some earthy tobacco characteristics that are currently masked by the abundance of red fruit.
7-17-7-9 (1124 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 12/14/2014 & rated 90 points: Bright ruby. Pepper and plum on the nose, with some alcohol heat. Transparent juicy strawberry on the palate, with good supporting acid and tannins, floral afternotes, quite long evolving finish. A simple, balanced and pleasing wine, belies the 15% alcohol. 50+16+16+8. (1199 views)
Tasted by Richard123 on 11/17/2014 & rated 89 points: Lovely lighter style red wine... Almost pinot noir-like, with tart cherry balanced by a little sweetness to avoid too much sourness. Pretty drinkable by itself or with food. Maybe missing a little extra sparkle, so not a 90. QPR just OK at $16+. (1141 views)

2012 Imprimata Grenache

An imprimatur (from Latin, "let it be released") is, in essence, a declaration, an endorsement...

Epicurean Wines is proud to announce the inaugural release of Imprimata, a Shiraz-Petite Sirah blend from the Australian property of Benjamin Hammerschlag. An old skeleton blue gum tree that stands on the McLaren Vale property marks the source of this collaboration between renowned winemaker Ben Glaetzer and Epicurean's founder, Benjamin Hammerschlag. The partnership has resulted in only 500 coveted cases of intensely elegant, complex and focused single vineyard Shiraz and Petite Sirah.

Concurrent with his passion for seeking out Australia's best wines, Hammerschlag began his quest for the perfect piece of property for his own wine. His search ended at one of the highest points in McLaren Vale in the sub-district of Seaview, known for producing fruit with a track record for the highest quality. The Imprimata vineyard consists of ironstone and clay over limestone and benefits from cool maritime breezes each afternoon. Upon securing this location, Hammerschlag got to work in the vineyard selecting 2 clones of Shiraz: 1654, which is very typical of South Australia and Tabhilk, sourced from the oldest winery in Victoria and more reminiscent of the northern Rhone. In addition to Shiraz, the vineyard is also planted with Petite Sirah, a varietal that is naturally higher in acid, tannin and color, thereby enhancing the wine's mineral character and providing structure to the blend.

His Winemaker: With a relationship rooted in 10 years of friendship, Ben Glaetzer and Benjamin Hammerschlag share a common vision of producing wines that while they exhibit a distinct ripeness, richness and power also are balanced and vibrant.

In this first release, Hammerschlag's goal has been to produce the best wine from this particular location. He describes his role as that of managing the grapes along the way but ultimately letting this special place dictate the outcome. He happily notes that anyone laying down a bottle of this inaugural vintage is ultimately on the same journey that he is.

Imprimata Grenache
McLaren Vale, South Australia
100% Grenache grown in the tough Ironstone laden hillside. The vines appear to float above the valley and the sea below, braving the winds off of the Southern Ocean and keeping yields achingly low, thus producing a profound Grenache of delicate balance. Aged in neutral oak for 5 months.
