| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Oenecnist on 11/9/2023: Bought 6b from Davis and Co auction 26+ years ago for 30-/b after all commissions and taxes; this is #4. Top shoulder fill. Solid cork, fully stained, a bit damp. Decanted with normal sediment for its age. Dark purple (no amber); rich mature blackcurrants, hint of olive, hint of oak; mature dark fruits that held well for an hour+ with a bit of fruit fade toward the end; very good mouthfeel. Delicious! I enjoyed this in the years shortly after purchase and then lost track of it but uncovered it recently. It is among the tastiest 40-yo red wines I've tasted; certainly glat to have two more. Stored horizontally in a dark basement with good humidity since purchase. Quality/age/price: Outstanding-. (251 views) | | Tasted by Vinnut on 3/9/2023 & rated 94 points: Medium-deep, dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of floral & earthy/dusty notes & classic cigar box notes of cedar & tobacco, leather, herbs, mint/anise, spices, minerals & a hint of vanilla/oak. Full bodied with very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & black plums with herbs, spices, minerals & a hint of vanilla/oak. Long lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 40 years of age, it is at its peak of development although it may hold here for a few more years. However, I doubt any further development would occur with additional aging, so drink up. Fill was in lower neck; cork was stained 3/4 up but intact. An amazing wine! (486 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/11/2022 flawed bottle: Jim's Retirement Party (Libertyville, IL): Well past its peak, nowhere near the quality level of a bottle tasted two years ago. (1336 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/28/2020 & rated 93 points: In vertical. Eucalyptus and mint aromas to start with so much dense black fruit that’s aging gracefully. Layered, complex and wonderfully fresh. (1964 views) | | Tasted by acyso on 11/9/2019 & rated 93 points: "You only turn 45 once" (Chicago, IL): Served double blind next to the 1985 LMHB. I was able to get to 1980s Napa on this bottle, from the fruit profile that was just more sweet and expressive than its French companion. I ended up thinking this was Mayacamas, but mostly it was a shot in the dark. I love the herbaceous expression coupled with all the ripe fruit. I'll add that I preferred this to the 1985 LMHB too. (2061 views) | | Tasted by Nanda on 11/9/2019 & rated 94 points: 45th Birthday Celebration (Chez Nanda): Wow, I love Forman Cabs, but have never had the '83 before. This is signature Forman with that intense tar component. Fruit is still forward and rich with plenty of structure. In a great spot now and should hold just fine for 10+ years. (1459 views) | | Tasted by buckeye76 on 4/8/2000 & rated 93 points: CIGAR BOX, LEATHER, AND BLACKBERRIES IN THE NOSE WITH JAMMY FRUIT AND BLACKBERRIES IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. Robert Parker: "Ric Forman is arguably Napa Valley’s first superstar winemaker. Although sometimes overlooked today, there is little question Forman has had a profound influence on a number of younger winemakers who still speak of him with great reverence. In 2012 Forman celebrated his 46th harvest. Today, Forman counts on the assistance of his son Toby, in running this small, family-owned jewel of an estate. As for the wines, they are superb, but, best of all, remain realistically priced for the consumer who wants to drink top-flight Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon without having to take out a second mortgage. Forman’s Cabernet is one of the classic masterpieces of Napa Valley, even if recent vintages come across as a bit riper than the norm. Still, it is impossible to go wrong with any of these wines."Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
