Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 135 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wineian on 4/23/2024 & rated 94 points: 25th anniversary wine for the Estate. Opened with blue/red fruit bouquet and was initially tightly wound. With time in the glass the aromatics opened and the wine became silken. Purity freshness and intensity framed the palate. I liked it more and more as I spent time with it. A beautiful wine.  Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 10/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Cracking the whip; 10/16/2023-10/23/2023 (Eagan, MN): N: A light and clean cranberry note with a freshness to it, and an airy stone note as if you’re in an open field of dried grass, near the sea, without any saline notes from the ocean breeze.

P: Cranberries with a drying sensation on the palate. Oak and graphite on the finish along with tons of steeped tea.

Drinkable now but something tells me this could use even more age.. The palate is still very strict and a bit austere. Could use some decanting if serving now. Curious to see how this evolves the next 4-6 years. (3274 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 9/11/2023 & rated 92 points: still has a long way to go but with remarkable upside potential
double decant for 5 hours
still backwards at first but began to finally yield a little magic at vinetasters
not hard to pick out tuscany area [compared to piedmont] but so so stiff still
will try again in 7-10 years (2658 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 8/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Vinminnen 17 (Fiskaregatan Lund): Vinminnen 17 (2785 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 8/6/2023 & rated 95 points: Super Tuscan!
Great flavour, lovely texture, wonderful complexity.
Enjoyed with 2 other couples to accompany a great Spanish tapas style meal. (2616 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/1/2023: Ornellaia Dinner (Stefani Prime - Lincolnwood IL): Double blind in what turned out to be an Ornellaia vertical, which I correctly identified as an Italian Bordeaux blend. I think there was something wrong with this bottle. Restrained start with subdued aromas, then much too tart on the palate and nearly drying. This should be beautiful. (3244 views)
Tasted by Philolesen on 7/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Dark berries, liquorice, mocha and herbs. I think it was a bit too young however it wouldn't keep much longer. 3-4 years at the most. Super delicious bottle. (1860 views)
Tasted by shellylowen on 6/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Super soft tannins, cherry, plum, medium finish, full body (1594 views)
Tasted by Plabella on 6/14/2023 & rated 98 points: A profound wine fully integrated with cherry & chocolate flavors (1751 views)
Tasted by _Xenon on 5/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Gentlemen's birthday weekend - wine tasting journey: Liguria & the Cote d'Azur; 5/18/2023-5/20/2023 (Perinaldo, Liguria, Italy & Cote d'Azur France): Clearly recognized as middle aged. However, quite some discussions whether this is a Bordeaux or just Bordeaux based grapes.

This wine was in a very nice condition and clearly a highlight this evening. Sadly prices have exploded and I am not seeing myself buying more of these.

Bought at Mövenpick Wein Düsseldorf November 2013 für 120 €. Current market value, a whopping 250 €. *sigh!* (1954 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 4/29/2023 & rated 95 points: In a beautiful drinking window now. A classic Bordeaux-like profile with cassis and blackberry complemented by leather, mushrooms, smoke and earth. Good backbone of acidity, well integrated tannins and a long finish. (1759 views)
Tasted by Radders12345 on 3/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Joel's Tuscan Lunch (The wilds of Kent): First time trying Ornellaia. Decanted the day before.

Everything here is really rich and deep with supremely intense ripe dark plum. A lot of structure on the palate but not as much acidity as it could take. Sleek, intense and polished overall but it hasn't really won be over as a wine i'd seek out which is just as well! (2438 views)
Tasted by fussyeater on 3/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Tuscan Lunch chez Joel (Kent countryside, UK): Almost black in colour. Prunes, liquorice, tobacco and leather on the nose. Full bodied with fine tannins and certainly on the black fruit. A bit heavy and unsubtle. Not really my cup of tea. Decanted the previous evening. Also the commemorative label looks a bit naff(!) (1968 views)
Tasted by NickA on 3/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Joel's Tuscan Lunch (A farmhouse in leafy Kent): 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Double-decanted the evening before. Very opulent and 'well-made', sleek despite its structure, with thyme seasoning the fruit. Intense and impressive. (2034 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 2/23/2023 & rated 94 points: It’s got all the great stuff to last. Decanted for 3 hours, still tight, good tannin structure, bold fruit, it’s a baby. Drank side by side with an ‘05 from a magnum. Both will last 20-30 more years. Drink again in 5+. Years. Hold. (1905 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 12/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Lots of very dark berries, black cherries, some tobacco, dark chocolate and soft spicy notes. A big wine, but not overdone or over extracted. It feels quite elegant in the mouth. A nice soft acidity brings some freshness in the background. Silky tannins, completely integrated now. Great fruit structure and depth. Very good complexity and a nice overall balance make this wine really enjoyable. The finish is long, dark and savory.
It’s slowly getting into a good spot, and with some air it’s drinking great now. But in my opinion it will be even more beautiful and more balanced with another 5 or 10 years on it. If you have the patience, wait a little longer. (IG) (1950 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 10/8/2022 & rated 95 points: Ornellaia/Sassicaia/Masseto horizontal. This was my favorite of the three, though the Sassicaia was not too far behind. Such terrific, pure fruit with true cabernet character -- bell pepper, tobacco, cigar ash for days. Precise and fine structure. Fun now should age for decades. (2665 views)
Tasted by Plabella on 9/15/2022 & rated 99 points: This wine is beautiful. Well integrated Tannis. The wine is balanced with beautiful fruit, chocolate, & coffee and just comes together smoothly. (2733 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 8/8/2022: Not ready yet (3041 views)
Tasted by ploher on 7/2/2022: First day just overwhelming with gigantic structure and huge tannins. Certainly impressive in its scale without being enjoyable. Second day the chocolate covered, red berry fruit emerge showing nice balance between acidity and fresh fruit while the structure loosens up. Certainly very good, but the price for these is just ridiculous. 17+/20 (2905 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 2/19/2022 & rated 95 points: Decanted about 3 hours. (3723 views)
Tasted by drdan8 on 1/15/2022 & rated 90 points: This is a well crafted wine but leaves something to be desired in comparison to some of the previous Ornellaia vintages ( 2006-2008).

Removed from a 56 degree active and poured to a wide bowl to rest for 90 minutes. Really refined and enticing nose of dark fruit, boysenberry, tobacco, menthol, and cherry. No notes of distinction.

Rather generic on the palate with a melange of dark fruits, leather, and assorted faint spice. This just felt hollow and didn't offer any excitement. Somewhat clipped on the finish. Almost conveyed the impression that it couldn't decide if it wanted to be old world ( Bordeaux) or new world ( Napa) in style. The wine just felt confused and linear in comparison to other great Ornellaia vintages.

Thumbs up to the stylish 25th anniversary bottle design. The contents inside just didn't reflect well on the price point; irregardless of the pedigree. Although the 2010 Bolgheri vintage was well heralded, the Ornellaia was not one of the standouts IMHO. I don't believe time will further improve its evolution; but that of course is a guessing game.  Tasted by Collector1855 on 12/23/2021 & rated 96 points: Tasted blind, the 3 Aias from the stellar 2010 vintage. The Solaia (96pt) was the most ripe of the them with generous dark fruit and bakery spices, almost like a Pomerol or a Napa Meritage. The Sassicaia (95pt) the most strict, more tannins less fruit, long but not broad. Finally, the Ornellaia (96+) in the beautiful 25y anniversary bottle striking in the middle with excellent balance and length around classic aromas of dark fruit and earthy elements. Confirms how good the 2010 vintage in Tuscany was. (4458 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/21/2021 & rated 90 points: Solid if unspectacular. (3523 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 11/1/2021 & rated 92 points: pnp. Outmatched by both a brunello and barolo that came before this wine and rather disappointing relative to my prior tastings of this wine. This wine will hopefully get better with time, but next time make sure to do a long decant. (3729 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Ornellaia

In 1994 something significant happened for Ornellaia and many of the highest quality wines from Bolgheri in Tuscany. After years of laboring under the humble 'Vino da Tavola' label, these wines were granted a new and unprecedented DOC which not only permitted, but mandated non-traditional Italian grapes. From the 1994 vintage on, Ornellaia has used the DOC Bolgheri Rosso Superiore. [TermOrnellaia (Read more about Ornellaia classification on CellarTracker)].
