Community Tasting Notes (average 87.4 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AlexHop on 4/29/2015 & rated 87 points: Ok but not much fruit or interesting flavors. Good acid that pairs well with Italian dishes but not enough enjoyable to be worth it. (1683 views)
Tasted by Winestache on 2/18/2015 & rated 82 points: Way past peak. Little to show for all that cellaring time (1654 views)
Tasted by vegasrenie on 2/27/2013 & rated 83 points: I hate to add a score to a wine that was obviously once wonderful. Wasn't on my Cellartracker list, so when I found it, I opened it immediately. Pop and pour, air in the glass, then trying to decant - all couldn't bring the fruit back. Earth elements fully intact, nose was wonderful and it was beautiful to look at. It wasn't a bad drink, but its core is gone. {{{sigh}}} (2504 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 2/1/2012 & rated 85 points: Minneapolis Wine Club California Merlot; 2/1/2012-2/2/2012: Past peak but I am glad we had this wine to compare against the superior 2002. Floral, raspberry and vegetal quality. Short finish and drink 5 years ago. (3280 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/28/2012 & rated 84 points: Minneapolis Wine Club Does Merlot (Gail's House): Very dark red color with some subtle bricking. Pop and pour, drank 1 glass over an hour. Nose was a mixed bag with damp earth, somewhat stewed fruit of a pruney nature, olive. The nose was better than the palate here with this coming off as thin with little fruit, alcohol showing through. Rustic. Clearly this was over the hill. 84pts or less. An interesting contrast to the 2002 which had a lot of life left. (3301 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 3/12/2011 & rated 89 points: earth and berry nose; sweet pomegranate, cherry fruit that has enough acidity and earth to make it interesting and bright; not that complex but lots of fun; a bit too fruity for the peppered lamb, but just right with the cheese. (1667 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 12/30/2010 & rated 87 points: Ruby red color. Earthiness starting to overtake the fruit - plum, blackberry, currant, a hint of cedar and subtle but lingering mocha on a long polished mild tannin finish. (1726 views)
Tasted by Winestache on 1/7/2010 & rated 86 points: Opened this as I saw recommended drinking seemed well past prime. I will disagree. While there is not a whole lot going on here in terms of complexity, still very pleasant glass. Let it breathe for about an hour and found some dried cherries in the nose and some earthiness as well. No real distinctive taste but balanced fruit with a short finish. Maybe a bit disappointing due to the price, but will wait a little longer on the one remaining bottle and see what happens. (1351 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 8/22/2009 & rated 90 points: Cedar and oak on the nose; tannic and a bit astringent bt balanced by ripe cherry and boysenberry fruit; bold with a lengthy finish and well balanced despite its size and strength. A merlot for those who like a big cabernet. Outclassed a sibling 2001 Provenance Cab Sauv Rutherford that night. (1369 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 4/21/2009 & rated 86 points: A little sour. (1431 views)
Tasted by Rojo on 11/21/2007 & rated 91 points: Nice wine. Pomegranate and cherry on the palate. Ready to drink now.Not much on the nose though, light pomegranate aroma. Velvety and a nice balancing of acidity with soft tannins. (1586 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/4/2006 & rated 90 points: Opened by a friend when we stopped by for a couple of glasses. Opened and poured into decanter, but first glasses were poured almost immediately, so no significant air time. Deep garnet/purple color. Some dark plum and maybe some chocolate aromas, along with a strong earthiness, which I did not mind. Fairly tannic, but with enough fruit to balance it out. Wait a bit yet on this one. (1982 views)
Tasted by mattowan on 3/30/2005 & rated 90 points: Rich and full bodied. Big red fruit with mild tannins. Great long finish. I wish it had a touch more complexity, but it may come with a little more age. Just wonderful. (2207 views)
Tasted by basis on 2/25/2005 & rated 86 points: Opaque purple, nose of sour cherry and flora. Tart, tough and tannic. It's not that it's bad, necessarily. It's just not good. (2137 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/14/2004 & rated 85 points: Quick Day Trip to Napa (Napa Valley CA): Tasting at winery. Lean black fruit on nose and palate, somewhat austere. (1065 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros

Straddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties.
