Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 105 notes)

Tasted by vinhonotte on 12/26/2019 & rated 91 points: Medium lemon, very bright, with fine beads. Bread yeasty aromas and lemon. Very ripe lemon fruit flavours, even candied, and creamy, and a slight sense of soft clay soils, with slight yeasty characters showing up later. Fair finish (1734 views)
Tasted by Nestor John Salazar on 4/30/2019: Neutral taste. Grapefruit citrus taste but not overwhelmingly. Light small affervescrnce (1836 views)
Tasted by Asmiller on 1/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Late disgorged bottle - good bubbles and aged chardonnay nose. A bit pricey at $100. (2662 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 12/31/2017 & rated 91 points: From Magnum at pre shift at MJ's OB. Thanks Jorge.
Nice rich toast with robust yellow fruit. Excellent mouth feel. Very nice treat. (2612 views)
Tasted by Asmiller on 12/21/2017 & rated 91 points: Made me think of croissants with citrus and candied ginger marmalade (2564 views)
Tasted by jonahfactor on 12/24/2015: The opener to Christmas Eve festivities with family. Lovely -- both this sparkler and the evening. Softened effervescence and straw hued in the glass, this is fully matured and likely won't get any better. Pears, apples, slight citrus and brioche. Nice toast in the finish. The 2012, which we had afterwards, suffered in comparison. (3513 views)
Tasted by eoinhharkins on 7/26/2015 & rated 92 points: Found another bottle in the cellar, and shows how well this producer's even entry level wines stand up with some additional bottle age, nice clean, golden Apple, brioche, pears, citrus, palate is a joy! The effervescence has subsided to yield a fresh harmonious mouth feel with generous fruit and acidity (3597 views)
Tasted by eoinhharkins on 3/28/2014 & rated 91 points: Certainly feels like it's peaking now, nice evolution on the notes, with hazel nut, brioche and apple, fruit has a mature feel on the palate with lively mousse and zippy acidity keeping it fresh (4221 views)
Tasted by lockandkey2 on 1/1/2014 & rated 92 points: good med+ to full body, nice apple and yeast on nose, this was ready to be drunk. don't hold any longer. (4308 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 11/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Lovely nose of cream, honey, lemon zest, and citrus with a nice mousse and tiny bubbles, more of he same on the palate, very creamy and velvety taste, a great starter sparkling wine. (4333 views)
Tasted by TPB on 10/31/2013 & rated 92 points: Excellent - light lemon and toasty, yeasty notes in the nose. More cream and bread in the finish. Perfect sparkler and better than most French champagne's to my palate. (2738 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 12/25/2012 & rated 88 points: Pale golden straw color. Yeasty with small tight bubbles. This has lost some of the citrus zest flavor from a year or two ago. Probably hung on to this a year too long. Does not change my opinion of Schramsberg as the premier sparkling wine producer in the US. (3631 views)
Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 10/18/2012: Served double blind. Noticeably heavier than the 06 Vilmart served alongside it. A bruiser in comparison. Quite taut, lactic and autolytic with plenty of white bread. I had this as the french one of the pair, thinking a selosse! (2867 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 7/20/2012 & rated 88 points: Drank from a 375ml split. Very toasty and yeasty. Sweet lemon flavors with a gingery undertone. Good effervescence. Slightly disappointing given that the 2006 Blanc de Noirs was excellent. (2647 views)
Tasted by maderay on 5/4/2012 & rated 89 points: G-VG. Bought and drank at Joe's Stone Crabs. (3049 views)
Tasted by Libiamo! on 2/24/2012 & rated 88 points: Fruit forwarded style (Warm vintage?). Lemon, brioche notes on the nose. Creamy. Medium finish. Solid good sparkling wine from US. (1914 views)
Tasted by DLCampbell on 2/14/2012 & rated 88 points: Pleasant and well made. Had some great yeasty/toasty aromas and flavors with decent depth. Schramsberg always does a great job, but this one didn't blow me away. Solid value sparkler. (3548 views)
Tasted by canan on 2/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Nose: very young green apple, oysters and salt water.
Palate: Very fresh green apples mixed with salt water. Minerals and a pure and clean flavor.
Impressive. (1826 views)
Tasted by Vince92673 on 1/30/2012 & rated 88 points: This wine is good, but a little too soft and sweet to be great. (1888 views)
Tasted by DanH on 12/27/2011 & rated 93 points: Strangely I keep liking this more and more. (3063 views)
Tasted by wongkevins on 12/20/2011 & rated 90 points: Great bottle of sparkling wine, very balanced with a very rounded almost creamy texture. (3104 views)
Tasted by drdebs on 10/14/2011 & rated 90 points: Not like any other US sparkler I've had--but then I don't usually drink vintage bubbles from 375 mls. Honey, cinnamon toast aromas and flavors, with lots of yeast coming through in the mid palate. Fine bead, creamy mousse. Very appealing--tastes older than 2006, which I guess makes sense given the bottle size. Would definitely repeat if I got the chance. (2065 views)
Tasted by DanH on 8/17/2011 & rated 92 points: I am really impressed with how well balanced this wine has become after just a few more months. Beautiful blend of pear, citrus, minerality and yeast. wonderful (3684 views)
Tasted by meistereder on 8/14/2011 & rated 92 points: Sparkling wine is either good or bad. This is very good. Nice balance, not too much acid. Good structure for a blanc de blancs. Celebrating getting through a Monday. It's the little things. (3553 views)
Tasted by rjdoan on 8/9/2011 & rated 88 points: Great starter for a fantastic meal. Light and dry, great with cheese. (3518 views)
Tasted by pec on 7/24/2011 & rated 82 points: Lots of fairly fine bubbles - good acidity and slight minerality. Notes of pineapple (2017 views)
Tasted by GoodfellaWizeguy on 7/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Schramsberg has become our favorite sparking wine. We are saving our Reserves for a special occasion, but decided to drink a Blanc de Blanc. Great Balance with mostly a pear flavor. Great QPR! I don’t think my wife and I have ever finished a bottle so quick. (3634 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 6/17/2011 & rated 90 points: Yeasty nose, fresh. Palate fresh, citrusy, breaded. Good. 89-90. Texture would be better with most softness on the mousse. (2075 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 5/22/2011: Preferred the Schramsberg Mirabelle to this - very nice sparkler though. Given dinner party no notes. (1863 views)
Tasted by DadsWine on 5/21/2011 & rated 91 points: Dry, light toast, love this wine, very food-friendly. (4264 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 5/20/2011 & rated 88 points: WineGavel Tasting (San Francisco Wine Center): Yeasty nose, lost its stream of bubbles very quickly; palate tart, clean, good acidity; short finish. Enjoyable sparkler. 88-89 (4642 views)
Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 2/13/2011 & rated 92 points: A gorgeous wine with great green apple flavors transitioning seamlessly to a yeasty finish. Very enjoyable as a first experience with Schramsberg, and I ran out to find some more to try the next day. (2366 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 1/28/2011 & rated 88 points: Lemon, minerals, orange peel and crisp acidity. Chalk on the palate and a bit bitter. Nice Sparkling wine overall. (4657 views)
Tasted by Stephan O on 1/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Effusive mousse, straw colored, and showing more minerality than fruit. There's some pear, I think, but the main element seems to be a somewhat bitter (but not at all offputting) chalk or saline note. It's technically sound, with great balance and acidity. Good QPR, too, at ~$30. (4953 views)
Tasted by gschneider on 1/1/2011 & rated 88 points: Always a nice mid priced bottle. Full of bread basket, pear and citrus. (4871 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 12/15/2010 & rated 88 points: Baked apple pie, lemon and subtle minerals. A light palate overall with lemon, orange peel and chalk. Short to medium finish with good acidity. Very drinkable but not as good as 2007. (5183 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 12/2/2010: Had a nice bit of minerality; good value. (5017 views)
Tasted by DanH on 11/27/2010 & rated 90 points: Reliably aswesome. Greatly benefitted from a few years aging. (5392 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 11/20/2010 & rated 91 points: No notes but a hit at our dinner party. I love this wine. Crisp, good fruit. Keeps you coming back. (5546 views)
Tasted by annerk on 10/31/2010 & rated 90 points: 50+5+13+15+7 Pale color, subtle hints of apple, pear, yeast on the nose that continue into the palate with a nice medium body and acidity. Used as an aperitif and was wonderful for that purpose. (5724 views)
Tasted by Tomas C on 10/19/2010 flawed bottle: Nose of apple and subtle citrus flavors. Showed nice body with a creamy subtle yeast finish. Beautiful starter wine (6025 views)
Tasted by mikeaukenbals on 8/10/2010 & rated 88 points: a bit tart. solid bdb, but would prefer more buttery-champagne style. great bubbles, but very light and a bit boring. (6113 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 8/7/2010 & rated 89 points: San Antonio Wine Geeks - The Lew Residence (The Lew Residence): Doesn’t disappoint at this price point. Lovely dough and yeast nose with green apples on the nose. Crisp refreshing palate with a hint of citrus added to the apple flavors with a short to medium crsip mineral finish. Great balance. Lacked some body compared to the Veuve Cliquot, but at this price point delivered fantastic value. (6881 views)
Tasted by brownman6 on 7/18/2010 & rated 90 points: golden, good fruit, acidity ok, long bubbles (6398 views)
Tasted by Malia Ten Yulna on 5/23/2010: tiny bubbles ; drank on bottle with Chinese and another with some strawberries; crisp, light, very sauvignon blancish for a chard, reasonably nice finish - delightful well rounded; not bittter, a touch sweet but very light on the sweetness. (6437 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 5/17/2010 & rated 91 points: Very enjoyable. Light, refreshing, a perfect Sunday afternoon bubbly (or any afternoon for that matter). Complimented a diverse vegetarian spread. Liked by all. (6107 views)
Tasted by Rahearn on 4/19/2010 & rated 90 points: Crisp; best tiny bubbles; (2052 views)
Tasted by 10centpower on 4/13/2010 & rated 90 points: Continues to be my benchmark for mid priced CA sparklers. Light, and crisp, with a healthy dose of yeasty aromas and citrus fruits. (6170 views)
Tasted by twojtkiewicz on 3/12/2010 & rated 90 points: solid wine (6159 views)
Tasted by Venezia on 2/12/2010 & rated 91 points: fantastic. crisp apple. (6116 views)
Tasted by Steve Jones on 12/31/2009 & rated 89 points: NYE. Very nice sparkler, not as good as the 2004 when I last had it but still quite nice. Chardonnay comes screaming through, nicely balanced and bubbly. (5819 views)
Tasted by yonster24 on 12/31/2009: Light in color. Nutty, with some citrus coming in on the palate. Don't really have too many notes as this was popped on New Years Eve. Another solid wine from Schramsberg, if not spectacular. (5985 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 12/31/2009 & rated 90 points: Pale straw color, tight, long lasting bubbles, clean on the pallet with a citrus finish. Tasted side by side with the 2006 Schramsberg Blanc de Noir, highlighting the differences between the varietal blends. Blanc de Noir was slightly more golden in color, exhibited a bit more depth and more yeast in the finish. For my money, Schramsberg produces the finest sparkling wine in the US in the absence of S. Anderson. (5985 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 12/30/2009 & rated 87 points: Some funk on the nose and the palate. Lighter style - pleasant but not memorable. (5675 views)
Tasted by acox on 12/24/2009: Light, faintly yellow color with steady tiny bubbles. Clean soft nose. Pear, lemon, yeast on the palate. Crisp, refreshing finish. New to sparkling, but thought this was excellent! (5756 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 12/20/2009 & rated 88 points: Dry. Strong minerality. Much better than the last time I had this. (5408 views)
Tasted by 10centpower on 12/17/2009 & rated 92 points: Really enjoyed. Great balance of bubbles, sweetness (very little), yeast nose and fruity finish. Great example of CA sparkler, will enjoy again. (5634 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 12/5/2009 & rated 86 points: no real flaws, but hardly an exciting wine. (4460 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 12/5/2009: Bubbly Blow-Out (Sportsman's): Simplistic. Too sweet. Awful bitter finish. Other than that it's fantastic!!! (5845 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 11/12/2009: Trip to Napa/Sonoma; 11/7/2009-11/14/2009 (Napa/Sonoma): Pleasant nose with a little fresh dough, pear and apple. Crisp palate with a distinct mineral note. Refreshing bright citrus finish without any bitterness. Quite nice. (5905 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
