Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 168 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bowmanifesto on 12/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Oh, snap! This wine matured from excellent to outstanding. (268 views)
Tasted by klezman on 4/2/2023: This bottle seemed a bit oxidized maybe. Fruits were more stewed and dried while the colour had bricked a touch. Nonetheless it was good but not compelling with similar impressions as the prior bottle 2 years ago. (1097 views)
Tasted by SeanFlannery on 11/6/2022 & rated 89 points: It might be a bit past it’s prime, slightly opaque in color, but still has a great nose and was delicious. We had it with grilled salmon and it was an excellent dinner companion. (786 views)
Tasted by anonymoose12345 on 6/12/2022 & rated 92 points: PnP. This is everything you want out of a Sonoma Coast pinot. Savory on the nose with dark red fruit. High acidity on the palate with ripe dark red fruit, dried herbs, tobacco. Medium length finish, some tannin, tart fruit. Delicious. (1077 views)
Tasted by DavidWong168 on 5/4/2022 & rated 91 points: Pale medium ruby and starting to show a shade of tawny. Medium intensity aromas of wet mulch, mushroom and cherry cola. Ripe and broad on the palate, full of summer berries on the attack and then it gets interesting and reveals a prominent umami note redolent of konbu (kelp). Long savory finish. (1070 views)
Tasted by jmull on 8/4/2021 & rated 90 points: Lovely, mature SC pinot. Slightly brownish hue but nice fruit andcsome mild tertiary notes. Elegant. Drink up. (1787 views)
Tasted by Gruffalius on 5/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Never let’s me down! (1676 views)
Tasted by Jonathanc5 on 4/30/2021: Subtle, medium body, smooth mellow flavors. Not complex but worth its price. (1605 views)
Tasted by klezman on 4/13/2021: An interesting combination of very ripe/fruity from a cool climate. Loads of cherry, cola, and the higher end of medium body. Plenty of earth to round it out, excellent acid balance, and quite a good wine for the $25 LB price. (2697 views)
Tasted by travelme on 3/11/2021: TheBigBaby nailed the notes. I got Bret or even cork on my bottle. I won't rate because I believe it may have been a flawed bottle especially when looking at other notes. Sadly, my lone bottle purchase so I won't be able to compare. (1748 views)
Tasted by Thebigbaby on 2/20/2021 & rated 87 points: Cloudy in the glass. Took about 30 min to open up/come to life. Nose of berries and stems/vegetables. Smooth, soft and supple, with a hint of sweetness on the medium finish. Very solid QPR from LB @$25. Drink up! (1342 views)
Tasted by Gruffalius on 2/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Never lets me down! (1158 views)
Tasted by Château de Farmer on 1/31/2021 & rated 90 points: Solid, ruddy, a little smoky/vegetal. Nearing the end of the drinking window but still within shouting distance of its recently passed peak. Nose had me a little concerned but just needed some time to blow off. (1260 views)
Tasted by tominasia on 1/29/2021 & rated 91 points: Sad to be opening my last one. Great deal from Last Bottle - at $25 this one really drinks above it's pay grade. (1101 views)
Tasted by Simoncino on 1/28/2021 & rated 91 points: Some good tannic grip that kept this interesting. Cranberries on the palate and typical red fruits of non-unique, Sonoma Pinot Noir on the nose. I don't feel too guilty of the purchase at $25 ($48 on wine-searcher on the right of the page). Drink now with a good decant. (1022 views)
Tasted by Bowmanifesto on 1/9/2021 & rated 88 points: Very enjoyable. Very drinkable. Cheers! (1120 views)
Tasted by tominasia on 11/30/2020 & rated 91 points: Good nose and taste of red fruit - cherries, strawberry - smokey mid palate with a slightly bitter finish. Better on day 2 after it opened up a bit. Drinking well. (1410 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 11/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Black fruit, red fruit, cola, herbal notes and finishes Smokey. A-/A (1348 views)
Tasted by Gruffalius on 10/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Great qpr at $25. Lovely red fruits. Failla rocks. (1708 views)
Tasted by Gruffalius on 8/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Great qpr at $25. Gorgeous as always. Soft and smooth. Cherries. (1317 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 8/9/2020: Consistent, but maybe a bit better than last time. (1917 views)
Tasted by jmull on 8/7/2020 & rated 89 points: Plenty of life left. This is soft with plenty of fruit. Nice acidity. Slight bitter edge to the finish. (1515 views)
Tasted by Pathfinder4133 on 7/17/2020 & rated 87 points: The app forced me to rate the wine. Otherwise, I would not have rated it. Not because it wasn’t noteworthy, but because I don’t feel like I am getting it at it’s prime. I enjoyed it and did taste the notes of cherries but I plan to drink my other bottle very soon. I drank the 2013 vintage. I would recommend the wine and recommend drinking it now. (1368 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 7/7/2020 & rated 91 points: Nose of cherries, rose petal, Asian spices. Similarly on the palate, with notes of other red fruits (cranberry, pomegranate) and orange rind. CA sun-kissed fruit but definitely not overdone or over the top. Very enjoyable. Paired very well with braised pork shoulder. (1264 views)
Tasted by Plasmatini on 6/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Lots of cherry, strawberry, some darker fruit, crushed earth on the nose, savory but fruitful, soft tannins, and great acidity, & a soft, lingering finish. Maybe not as distinctive as some of the single vineyard Faillas, but a super maybe every day Pinot Noir. (1393 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
