Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 113 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dke on 3/2/2024 & rated 91 points: Short decant. Wine was well integrates and really nice match with beef stew. No detailed notes but this seems to be the right time to drink this. (119 views)
Tasted by mtgu on 6/2/2023 flawed bottle: Oxidised / undrinkable (446 views)
Tasted by Rickets on 9/17/2021 & rated 96 points: decanted 90min. this was absolutely singing. at peak but no hurry. will last another 5 years i imagine. (1386 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 4/20/2019 & rated 93 points: Just into 93 point territory.... this wine is clearly just at peak, needing a 1-1.5 hour decant before reaching its peak performance. Phenomenal supertuscan blend, clearly a blend of Italian sangiovese and merlot, with a touch of cabernet... my only qualm is that the finish is just a bit thin and moderate in length. If you have bottles of this, drink now +6-12 months. Will not improve, is in a phenomenal place now after an hour or so of air. Phenomenal value at the $30 I paid for it 10 years ago. (2408 views)
Tasted by Bluespolo on 4/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Fatto per piacere, e ci riesce senza sforzo, ovvero senza risultare piacione.
Tasted by BobbaWA on 12/31/2018 & rated 93 points: Waited to share this bottle with the friends who introduced us to Brancaia; worth the wait. Big wine with the depth and balance of the cab/merlot (chocolate and dark fruits) with a little spritely character (spice) from the sangiovese. (2286 views)
Tasted by Eleven on 5/3/2018 & rated 90 points: Surprisingly big wine. The CT drink window has it drinking through 2016, but I think this can go a several more years. I’d like to try it in 2020 to see its evolution. It’s color is rich and deep in the glass. The nose is dark fruit, wood and a touch sweet...almost like honey. It’s a lucious and full wine with far more tannis than I expected. Others have mentioned it’s overdone and that’s certainly not an unfair view. It’s oaky, but also delicious. I agree it’s a wine to enjoy with food. For the price point, I think Brancaia makes a nice bottle of wine. (2608 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 3/10/2018 & rated 92 points: Very big but good. Heavy Sangiovese with a bit of Cabernet. (2072 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 1/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Very big and oaky. Almost overdone. Cabernet dominating? Good with food but almost too much on its own. Sour cherries and camphor. Maybe leave for a while longer. (1381 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 11/8/2017 & rated 84 points: Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.

Another disappointing Toscana for me. I simply don't get it. Maybe there's a hole in my soul. I do not argue with others' reactions. In fact, I wish that I had something close to the positive experiences they report, but alas, I do not. (1566 views)
Tasted by traxxx on 6/7/2017 & rated 92 points: In a real good place..PNP and drank over 2 hours..still has 5 good years left (2201 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 2/1/2017 & rated 93 points: This one finally hit it's stride. Smooth and Rich. A real treat! (2104 views)
Tasted by Jay Hack on 1/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Decanted for about 90 minutes and then followed for about three hours. This wine is still not fully ready but after three hours in the decanter it was blossoming with more red fruit and that earthy, mixed mushroom and forest floor flavor profile that I find common in Italian wines, especially but not exclusively those with a Sangiovese base. This wine is 50% Sangiovese,45% merlot and 5% cabernet. The merlot gives it some smoothness and a velvety feel with some brighter red fruit while the Sangiovese adds the earthy forest terroir. The cabernet? Who knows. (2196 views)
Tasted by wirelesswine on 12/31/2016 & rated 93 points: This was a big hit at a dinner party amongst a bunch of other quality wines. Delicious fruit profile yet very savory at the same time. All the right amounts of structure and spice with a long finish. Awesome stuff. (2134 views)
(2431 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 8/30/2016 & rated 92 points: WIML92

Tasted non blind.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of flowers, earth and mixed dark fruits. Flavors of plums, berries and raspberries. Medium to tangy acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now. (2450 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 4/17/2016 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour. Camphor and something faintly floral on the nose. On the palate, raspberry, currant, plum, and a note of bitter tobacco on the medium to long finish, with moderate to good acidity. This did open up some over the course of an hour, but it was basically ready to go right out of the bottle; it may improve slightly over the next few years. Very good value at a bit under $50. (2297 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 1/26/2016 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby red. Takes a while to open. Beautiful Sangiovese nose. Almost brunello like. Complex. Long finish. Very good. Drink in the next couple of years (2532 views)
Tasted by Anders C J on 1/24/2016 & rated 90 points: Had it with truffle pasta, truffle and scrambled eggs. Excellent pairing to this wine. Decanted for 2 hours. Long nose, red berries and spices. Complex and well structured wine with some black barries and herbs in addition to the nose. Italian in style which is very enjoyable. Long finish. Time to drink now. (2425 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 11/20/2015 & rated 93 points: This was awesome. Decanted for 2 hours. Dark opaque red color with an hint of orange edge. Nose was fruit and spice. Palate was dark red/black fruit, prunes, spice. it was very good. Still has potential to improve. Medium to long finish. (2278 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 8/16/2015 & rated 93 points: A blend of 50% Sangiovese, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Stylish, pleasurable and supple like a Ferragamo slip-on. Bright, medium (+) ruby with some garnet on the rim. Some staining on the noticeably thick legs. The nose is clean, medium (+) in intensity and developing (+). The nose is quite complex, with aromas of red fruit (cherries, craisins, strawberries) black fruit (cherries, dried prunes) dried herbs (celery, dill, mint, oregano), a little vegetal (black olives and stewed tomatoes), savory spices, sweet spices (vanilla, clove, nutmeg) and a lot of oak-induced vanilla, dill, toast, smoke and coco, finished off by some organic forest floor and balsamic. The palate is dry and consistent with the palate, with a long finish of strawberries steeped in balsamic vinegar. The acidity is medium (+), the tannins are medium and resolving, and the alcohol is medium (++) at 14.5%. This is a very smooth and elegant yet full-bodied wine. It is a new-world style IGT with 20 months of aging in French oak barrels, yet it retains a distinct Tuscan flavor profile. It is drinking beautifully now but is likely to continue to age gracefully for several more years. It is very food-friendly and a great foil for Tuscan fare or hearty beef and roasts. Very impressive. (2306 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 7/15/2015 flawed bottle: The cork told the tale as it was fully streaked. Not a total loss as we drank it but it was clear that it had received a bit of unwanted air along the way. Too bad! (1943 views)
Tasted by wurzel68 on 6/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Rote Beeren, dunkle Kirschen, Rauch, Speck und Nüsse, etwas Leder; facettenreich an der Nase, am Gaumen voll, aber schon etwas gealtert wirkend, ausgewogen, guter Abgang; leichte Diskrepanz zwischen der intensiven Nase und dem Gaumeneindruck (1837 views)
Tasted by Pvinbrock on 10/13/2014 & rated 93 points: Better then expected, Great fruit, bold but very drinkable. Decanted for two hours, needed it. Have another bottle should be good for another year or so. (2817 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 9/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Very nice with notable tannins. More time needed but a rich smooth taste that has potential for greatness. (2457 views)

Brancaia

Producer website

U.S. Importer?

Casa Brancaia was founded in 1981 by the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer. It is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The vineyard experienced a quasi vertical takeoff, as it already won with the 1983 vintage won first place at a major Chianti Classico tasting. This rapid success is the friendship with the Mazzei family, owners of the famous Castello di Fonterutoli owe. In their cellar, the wines of Casa Brancaia were pressed up to the 1997 vintage and expanded. Since 1998, the wines in their own, vinified using the most modern principles built cellar. The management of the property taken over in 1999 the daughter of Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer and her husband Martin Kronenberg. They are supported by star winemaker Dr. Carlo Ferrini. La Brancaia is already one of the flagship company of Tuscany and receives for its wines every year national and international awards. Brancaia Casa also has a winery in Maremma. From there comes the Ilatraia.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
