| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 90 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by danicaradovanov@gmail.com on 2/6/2022 & rated 92 points: I bought this for $26.95 at some unknown point in time in the early 10s and promptly forgot about it in my EuroChef wine fridge for 7 years and then the ancient temp controlled wine cellar in my new house. I Coravined my bottle today and let it air out for 30 minutes. I was skeptical, but it poured a gorgeous garnet with slight bricking towards the edge, and a clear rim. After an hour decant it has blueberries, berry bramble, dark fruits, smoke, bacon fat, and floral notes on the nose, red fruits on the attack with blackberry, white pepper notes and spice, good acidity and well integrated tannins still present, a medium finish. Absolutely delicious. Astonishing value syrah. (740 views) | | Tasted by bobadopolis on 5/25/2021 & rated 88 points: Bought at auction, as opposed to first 2 bottles which were bought locally. After 2 outstanding showings, this most recent bottle was a bit over the hill, albeit still enjoyable. Dark prunes predominant, with loss of some of the more exuberant riper fruit from previous samplings, and EtOH (14.5%) much more prevalent than I remember. Maybe this bottle was not optimally stored, but would consider drinking soon regardless. (1193 views) | | Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 4/3/2020: Last ‘07 and it’s still really good. I’m sure these grapes go into someone’s much more expensive bottle these days. Neyers did a great job with the energy, purity, and savor here though. An underrated producer with realistic prices. (1808 views) | | Tasted by bobadopolis on 11/26/2019 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 1 hour, nothing short of spectacular (1903 views) | | Tasted by stevenjstein on 11/12/2018 & rated 94 points: Drinking surprisingly well for not especially pricey Syrah more than 10 years old. Plenty of blue/black fruit left, with something of a cool climate Syrah bright acidity on first opening. After a bit of air it got even more complex, with meaty, gamey notes coming out. (2118 views) | | Tasted by Matt Scott on 7/21/2018 & rated 93 points: This has aged as well as expected. Tobacco, dried sage, boysenberry, Indian spice and coconut shell. Seamless and present, with a long finish and still young persona. It has been nine years since I have enjoyed this. Drink now - 2022. (2156 views) | | Tasted by hankj on 5/16/2017 & rated 93 points: wow I thought these might be getting a little long in the tooth, but this last bottle was just banging on all cylinders, still fresh and bright and grippy but resolved and evolved too. If you like 'em mushroomy this had at leastg another teen years with proper storage. Right now though was splendid. (1934 views) | | Tasted by syrahz on 3/10/2017 & rated 93 points: Still great. Fruit is still there. Enjoyed with filet, squashed potatoes, and green beans. Yum! Wish it wasn't the last bottle. How I love a good Syrah. (1428 views) | | Tasted by ctjared on 3/2/2017: still fruity and medium finish (1239 views) | | Tasted by RedorDead on 12/20/2016 & rated 90 points: Surprised how much fruit this had at this age. (1450 views) | | Tasted by Vinobc on 6/20/2016 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby color. Started off musty, but opened up with aromas of Blackberry, blueberry and pomegranate. Firm tannins (despite the age). Served with grilled steak, which was a perfect match. The pepper flavor was less prevalent than the previous bottle. Overall, this is better from the bottle of 2 years ago. (1409 views) | | Tasted by Sonoma Bill on 3/22/2016 & rated 95 points: Group of Seven rated this syrah as #3 out of 7 quality California syrahs tasted. I, along with two others liked it the best. (1326 views) | | Tasted by ctjared on 7/30/2015: good pepper on the nose. still quite fruity, with decent acidity. silky tannins. (1477 views) | | Tasted by bobadopolis on 12/23/2014 & rated 93 points: Drank a few weeks ago, so cannot offer tasting notes. Just remember being blown away by a phenomenal syrah. What a pleasure. Highly recommended. (1876 views) | | Tasted by ctjared on 9/3/2014: More dusty then the rusack which preceded and less fruity. Good nonetheless with a nice long finish. (2085 views) | | Tasted by Matt T on 8/2/2014 & rated 91 points: Much improved over the last bottle I had over five years ago. This needed time for the tannins to resolve. The big blackberry fruit has held up and this has maintained a nice balance of acid and tannins. Medium length finish. At peak now. (1845 views) | | Tasted by papabluez on 6/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Really big wine -- could easily have been an aussie shiraz! Fruit, earthiness, wood on the nose. Is holding up well with plenty of structure yet. Black fruits and increasing complexity. Big but big from first taste to finish, thus balanced. Enjoyable and would be best with food, as it can be a little overwhelming by itself. Well made and a fun Sonoma syrah. So nice to see these California Rhone varietals aging so nicely. (1887 views) | | Tasted by hankj on 6/11/2014 & rated 93 points: in a great place right now - tasting consistent with my previous notes, just a little more tertiary. (1725 views) | | Tasted by napasoutherner on 5/29/2014 & rated 86 points: Flavors were off. Had after a 2007 Seghesio Zinfandel so it might have been warped by that. However, while it wasn't corked the brightness of the syrah was warped and my experience wasn't enjoyable. (1390 views) | | Tasted by mhewitt on 2/28/2014 & rated 93 points: This is an outstanding Syrah, especially for the price. Highly recommended. (1460 views) | | Tasted by Vinobc on 2/9/2014 & rated 88 points: Nice inky color, red fruit nose. Not too peppery with a plum and currant palate. (1493 views) | | Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 1/16/2014 flawed bottle: Corked. Just slightly corked, enough that I could easily pick it up on the cork and on the wine as it warmed. Sticking the decanter in the wine fridge helped hide it. However, the purity of fruit still shone through. Cold, so with minimal TCA, this was a very impressive CA syrah. The softness of the fruit/tannins while maintaining powerful flavors made this quite unique at this price point. Long and slightly drying finish. This wine made me really wish I could try an example free of TCA! (1468 views) | | Tasted by ctjared on 3/20/2012: A little too cloying this time. The 06 was substantially better. (3545 views) | | Tasted by t4drman on 3/3/2012 & rated 85 points: A pleasant enough syrah. A nose promising a rich experience with the taste, flavor profile and texture delivering a nice, supple wine. Still a little tannic but appearing to open up as time goes on. Pleasurable with a nice, hearty cut of beef. Enjoy. (3521 views) | | Tasted by PIntag on 1/14/2012 & rated 90 points: Last had this in July, 2009 and noted that it needed lots of air before it showed well. Unfortunately, I opened this up at a party and it didn't have time to breath before it was all gone. The one glass I had was still quite good with lots of up front fruit and meatiness, but I thought the oak was at the forefront and somewhat diminished the pleasure from it. I was hoping that the additional 2 years in the cellar would've helped in this regard, but no. Give this a good decant. | Neyers Producer website
Begun in 1992 by Bruce and Barbara Neyers, Neyers Vineyards produces about 15,000 cases of wine annually. About 25% of our production is Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on our 50-acre, organically farmed Conn Valley ranch. The vineyard is managed by Penterman Farming Company. We purchase additional grapes from a select group of growers, among them the Sangiacomo family of the Carneros District, Will Nord of Napa and Rossi Ranch of Sonoma County.
Winemaker Tadeo Borchardt joined us in 2004 after several years of experience in the industry making wine in both California and New Zealand. He's a Cum Laude graduate of the University of Arizona, a zealous advocate of our natural winemaking practices and an enthusiastic supporter of our appreciation for traditionally produced European wines. He brings with him a valuable combination of technical know-how and respect for tradition.
Bruce's experiences over the past several years working with Kermit Lynch Imports and a group of more than 100 French vintners have been important in shaping the style of our wines. Most of these producers farm organically, make their wines naturally without use of cultured yeast or laboratory designed winemaking aids, and are comfortable bottling their wines without either fining or filtration. We have long admired their wines, and eagerly adopted many of their natural winemaking practices.
In 1999, we purchased and renovated a winery on Sage Canyon Road in the hills outside of Rutherford in the Napa Valley. We produced our first vintage in this state of the art facility in 2000. In 2002, Wine and Spirits Magazine named Neyers Vineyards the Artisan Winery of the Year. Syrah Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)
Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountySonoma Coast * Sonoma Coast AVA (Wikipedia) * Sonoma Coast AVA (Wine Institue) |
