Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 136 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Cote d'Or on 10/10/2023: Tasted over 3 hrs
-dark red mild clearing
-grenache-y sweet kirsch wet stone
-med acidity provides nice balancing lift, med/med+ weight ripe cherry kirsch, med- tannins
-on its mature plateau (644 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 6/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Good dark cherry fruit, quite heavy as you would expect of a CndP. Rosemary, hedgerow. Long, fairly straightforward. Drinking now but will improve over the next decade. (752 views)
Tasted by _Xenon on 4/11/2023 & rated 93 points: A very nice wine, especially on day 2. Elegant nose, showing slight heat, grenache sweetness, a hint of smoke and leather, tertiary notes. Is probably at its peak, however no sign of fatiguee, probably 3-4 more years to go. Lots of sediment. Glad I have 2 more in my cellar. Bought for 30 € 9 years ago. (798 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 10/15/2022: mix of red and blue fruit, herbal, violets; palate is quite smooth, tannins still present but softer, medium + length, very lovely (954 views)
Tasted by Pour Boy on 9/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Grenache-dominated blend with 20% syrah. Drinking beautifully right now. The 2010 CdP vintage is ready to go. Don't hold them too long. (1100 views)
Tasted by Lordswood on 9/10/2022 & rated 90 points: (From magnum). Just beginning to turn into a tertiary led drink. On the cusp and improved over time and with air in the glass. Drink the next magnum in 2024…. (721 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/9/2022 & rated 91 points: Tasted vis-avis the Trois Sources from Julienne, this wins by a mile. Tasted over two days, this show both sweet Grenache and the cool minerality (and drinkability, least we forget) (1211 views)
Tasted by GlenviewGSW on 5/30/2022: Corked, (736 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 5/10/2022 & rated 91 points: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, 5% Mourvedre. Decanted. Med+ garnet. Med+ dried red fruit, dried black plum, grilled medicinal herbs, lavender, carob and sweet baking spice from 12 mos. aging in various sizes of oak containers. The nose is developed. Dry but fruit-forward, w/ med acid, med, resolved tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). Full-bodied, with med+ to pronounced flavor intensity and length. Drink now, not likely to improve with further aging. (694 views)
Tasted by bergkamp10 on 2/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Solid mature CDP. Black fruits on the nose, with some sweet raspberry and earthy notes coming through. Good dark color in the glass. Opened up after an hour, with the slightly stewed fruit notes integrating to produce a quite pleasant package of raspberry, bing cherry and smoked meats. Decent finish, still quite fresh with savory notes. There’s a bit of heat but overall this is holding up ok. After about 6 hrs, it started to markedly decline so I’m taking that as a sign to drink up my remaining bottles. (712 views)
Tasted by Doug Fir on 1/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Excellent with chicken-porcini-Marsala dish. Agree with some previous notes that it starts off with a slight stewed fruit flavor, but that dissipated after about 3 hrs open. Nice grenache and Mourvèdre fruit flavors, supple mouthfeel, maybe a little smokiness in there too. Really enjoyed this. (764 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 12/25/2021 & rated 93 points: Holy moly was this good tonight. Had with a lamb leg pounded thin and rolled up with tarragon, herbes de Provence (including lavender), shallot, mint, yellow onion, and some other ingredients slow cooked with parsnip and other accompaniments. Opened up and had a string stewed fruit component and I thought it was well over the hill. 4 hours in decanter for half of the bottle brought out pretty incredible grenache and other CdP notes belying this wine's relatively modest pedigree. I actually put about 1/3 of the bottle under some argon spray and had it the next night with reheating the same dish. The wine was pretty incredible and held together well, with an impressively long and complex finish. Tannins are resolved. There was a good bit of sediment matted to the inside of the bottle and the last 5% of the wine was pretty packed with it. Tannins resolved but still providing enough structure to keep everything together.

I don't think that this wine will improve further with any more time after being stored at 54F for 8 years. It needs a good 3 hour decant to show its stiff and is either at peak or slightly past at this point. Drink up! (788 views)
Tasted by Nedder_travels_the_world on 11/5/2021 & rated 92 points: This wine was past its peak. great nose showing it was good at one point but it's over the hill for this bottle. giving it a 92 bc at one point it was probably great (1017 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 6/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Seemingly at peak, seamless and easy drinking, with juicy red berry notes, Asian spice and some sweet floral overtones. Good energy, too. (1309 views)
Tasted by Pour Boy on 6/22/2021 & rated 88 points: This did not taste like a CDP tonight. A very soft and easy-to-quaff wine, kind of like a nice blanket. Not much of a nose and not a lot of edge to it. (1071 views)
(1068 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 5/25/2021 & rated 85 points: This bottle was not quite as good as previous bottles, not bad, but not quite as good. The nose is light and the flavors have an aged component with a big fruit middle, spices and dusty tannins. All the flavors don't hang quite well together. (936 views)
Tasted by ScubaSommelier on 12/27/2020 & rated 87 points: This was an interesting wine. On the nose it felt typical CdP, but the taste was a touch more smoky than expected. Not a bad wine, but missing some typicity imho. (1333 views)
Tasted by Jurgens on 10/4/2020 & rated 88 points: Hmm. Different this time. Showed hot year and marmalade. (1352 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 9/18/2020: Drinking very well. Delicious. No detailed notes. (1293 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 8/23/2020 & rated 89 points: This is drinking great right now, and went especially well with our smoked ribs and our favorite BBQ sauce. Glad we have 3 more bottles! (1389 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 7/27/2020 & rated 89 points: This is a solid value CdP. Went great with our leftover lollipop lamb chops. (1307 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 7/11/2020 & rated 90 points: Had the 5th of 6 bottles tonite with pizza and salad.
Delicious, showing a bit of browning in color, and notes of black cherry pie and some charcoal and pepper.
Maturing nicely, drink now through 2022. (1149 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 6/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Leather, tobacco, herbs and black fruit on the nose. Good acidity, blackberry, and firm tannins (969 views)
Tasted by Lordswood on 5/17/2020 & rated 90 points: From magnum. Lovely nose of sweet spice and dark red fruits. It is drinking beautifully now, with a lovely balance between resolved fine tannins, the fruit and the acidity. There is a sweetness of fruit that makes it particularly easy to drink. I am hoping that my memories of (a 1995) Vieux Telegraph at the same age are accurate and that this follows the same trajectory because I said more or less the same about the VT at 10 years old. At 15 years the VT morphed into something altogether more interesting and exciting as it dropped some of the sweetness and added tertiary flavours and aromas. If so, this could turn into something (for me) more complete. As it is, still a very nicely made wine that we thoroughly enjoyed. (1069 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
